Trojans Edge Scorps On Late Free Throws IIY DOUG R UTTER Jerome Marlowe hit two free throws with 1H seconds left to lift ilio West Brunswick basketball team to a 53-51 win over visiting North Brunswick last Friday. It was the only victory of the week for the Trojans, who lost at New Hanover and West Columbus earlier. "We did just gtxxl enough," West Brunswick Coach Billy Minis said of the game that featured 10 lead changes. "I'm just glad we were able to come up with this one." Mims said poor shooting contin ues to be the biggest problem for West Brunswick, which enters this week's action w ith an overall record of 3-10. "We haven't played that bad all year," he said. "Our biggest problem has been shooting the ball. We're still missing too many lay-ups and foul shots." Mims said he's pleased with the defense that the Trojans are playing and experts the shots to start falling for his players in the second half of the season. "I look to surprise some people when they come to our place," he said. "We're going to get after peo ple no matter what our record is." The Trojans were to play at East Bladen Tuesday night before relum ing home Friday to host South Brunswick. North Brunswick North Brunswick jumped out to a 124 lead in the first three minutes of the game as Dwam Waddeii hit two three-pointers anil a pair of free throws. Shaun Bowcns, who led West Brunswick with 17 points, stored eight in the first quarter to keep the Trojans close. Trailing 14-11 alter one period. West Brunswick used a 5-0 run early in the second quarter to tie the game at 16-16. The Trojans then outscored North Brunswick 7-2 the last four minutes of the opening half to take a 25-21 lead at intermission. Waddell made his third three pointer with 12 seconds to play in the quarter to give North Brunswick a 42-40 lead. The Scorns increased their advan tage to 47-41 early in the fourth quarter before West Brunswick came hack. The Trojans tied the game at 47 with 4:20 to play. After falling he hind 51-47, West Brunswick rallied again to tie the game at 51 with 3:03 remaining. Neither team scored again until Marlowe stepped to the foul line with 18 seconds left and hit both ends of a onc-and-onc opportunity. A desperation three-point attempt by North Brunswick clanged off the hack of the nm as the buzzer sound ed. "1 take my hat off to North Bruns wick," Mims said. "They've got some good guys coming up and Cliff (Gibson) is a good coach." Baldwin led North Brunswick with 31 points, and Waddell added 14 for the Scorpions. The Lady Trojans (5-0, 12-2) con tinued their winning ways last week with victories over conference oppo nents North Brunswick and West Columbus and 4-A New Hanover. "1 feel like we're playing hard ev ery game," Council said after Friday's 68-37 home win over North Brunswick. "It's the team playing well together and our defense." West Brunswick slipped past New Hanover 34-32 last Wednesday night in Wilmington and routed West Columbus 55-25 last Tuesday in Cerro Gordo. The Lady Trojans were to play at East Bladen Tuesday night before hosting South Brunswick on Friday. South Brunswick's Lady Cougars also entered this week's play unbeat en in the conference. "We'll really have to be ready and get up for that game," Council said. "That will definitely determine who's in first place." North Brunswick Monica King scored a career-high 21 points and Slaccy Hill added 16 to lead the Lady Trojans past North Brunswick last Friday in Shallottc. Playing their third game in four days, the West girls got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but dominat ed North Brunswick. The Lady Trojans were leading 6 4 with three minutes to play in the opening quarter before their offense got rolling. West Brunswick scored the last 10 points of the quarter to take a 16 4 lead, and then outscorcd the Lady Scorpions 12-2 the first four minutes of the second quarter to lead 28-6.
