AN ELECTRICAL SHORT is being blamed for the fire that destroyed the Harold and Darnella Evans
residence on tX.C. 130 near Civietown early Last Thursday.
Electrical Short Blamed For House Fire
BY SUSAN (JSHKR
Harold Evans, his wife anil
daughter escaped through a bed
room window early last Thursday
when fire engulfed their thrcc-bed
room brick home on N.C. 130 be
tween Shallotte and Civietown.
When the smoke alarm in the hall
outside his open bedroom door went
off at around 1:45 a.m. Thursday,
"there was nothing but smoke and
n^mr><; " Fvans said "1 col mv wife
. . .. , _ ~ - - " J T"v
and daughter up and went out my
bedroom window."
Uninjured were Evans, his wife.
Damella, and a married daughter,
Shelly Lynn Fulford.
Evans has always had smoke
alarms, he said. "I'm scared of fire;
it L<m destroy you.*
Evans went to another daughter's
home to call Civietown VFD. By the
time he returned to wait for fire
fighters, a state employee was
parked in front of the house, blow
ing a horn or siren apparently be
cause he thought someone might
still be inside the burning house.
Shallotte and Civietown volunteer
firefighters responded, including
Evans' son, Richard, who is assis
tant chief for Civictown VFD.
"It was totally engulfed by the
time we got here," said Richard
Evans. "When I found out where the
fire was, that's what scared me the
most."
Richard Evar.s said his father's
house and its contents were a total
loss, estimated by the fire depart
ment at $80,000.
"Nothing could be saved," he
said, "lliey pulled out a couch and
two chairs, but they were burned
too."
He said his narpnts would he. stay
ing temporarily with him until they
decide what they're going to do
next.
Harold Evans said the house was
insured, but not enough to cover the
entire loss.
His son, Richard, said firefighters
were able to locate where the fire
began near the center rear of the
house because that was the blaze's
hottest spot. Wiring in a base plug
on the wall separating the living
room from a back bedroom had
shorted out.
"It kepi sparking until it caught
the paneling, then the closet wall
and then it went on up through the
top of the house," he said. "It looked
like the wire had cither broken or
burned into."
