Fire Destroys Garage A Fire destroyed a garage in Winnabow Monday afternoon while children in an adjacent <Jay care ren ter slept through it all. For Clyde Tingen of Governor's Road (S.R. 1 52 1 ) it was a total loss. An estimated S4t),(XX) to S7().(XX) in tools and equipment at his part time auto repair shop was uninsured, said his wife, Jan. who runs the day care center. Tingen had planned the shop as a retirement business, but insurance would have been u>o high, said Mrs. Tingen. It contained about 25 years of tool collections. He spent about two or three hours a day working there in addition to working a full time job. Mrs. Tingen said she is just thank ful that no one was injured. "We can replace anything in there." she said, "but we can't re place these children." Volunteer firefighters from Win nabow, l ong Beach, Bolivia and Boiling Spring Lakes were able to keep ihc (ire from spreading to the home, where the children, ages 2 and up. were taking an afternoon nap, said Mrs. Tingen. "Thcv slept all the way through it." she said. "They never saw a flame." SB I agents began sifting through the debris Tuesday morning, trying to determine what started the blaze, she said. Brunswick County Fire Marshal Cecil Logan is out of town this week. The lire knocked out the Tingen's telephone service, so a neighbor had to call the fire department for help. The caller said the fire was at Jan's Day Care Center, prompting re sponse from a number of area fire departments. ? Parents were called and notified I of the lire Monday afternoon anil were told that it did not involve the * day care center, said Mrs. Tingcn. The children were still taking their naps when the parents began arriv ing, she said. "If the children saw anything it | w as perhaps a fire truck on their way home," she said. "I thank the Lord " they slept all the way thniugh it." Calabash Panel Making Plans BY DORI C. Gt'RGANllS The Calabash Coastal Initiative Committee, meeting last week to make plans for 1992. discussed fu ture improvements in the waterfront town. Calabash is set for the widening of N.C. 179 beginning in 1994, Chairman T.J. Morgan said in a tele phone interview last week. The pro ject, pan of the N.C. Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), should take only a year to complete. The plan calls for adding a turn lane through the business strip of N.C. 179 from die South Carolina state line to Clariday Road. Morgan said a sidewalk along that road is alro being considered. Another meeting of the local Coastal Initiative group will take place in the next few weeks, he said, to confirm and discuss plans for a "very big" projecL Morgan refused to discuss the na ture of that project until after he meets with the state committee of the Governor's Coastal Initiative Program. Coastal Initiative is a slate- and federally-funded project that helps local governments care for environ mentally-sensitive waters while building public interest in waterfront activities and trade.
