South Girls Whip West !o lake Waccamaw Lead BY DOUG KUTTKR South Brunswick's Lady Cougar basketball team grabbed the top spot in the Waccamaw 2-A Confcrcncc last week with impressive wins over West Brunswick and Whiteville. The 57-43 win at West Brunswick last Friday gave South Brunswick's girls sole possession of first place in the conference at the mid-point of the league season. Both teams entered the game un beaten in confcrcncc play. But it was the Lady Cougars who extended their winning streak to seven, while West Brunswick had its string of consecutive wins snapped at 1 1 games. "I think we played real, real hard," South Brunswick Coach Mike Isenberg said after the game. "Except for about one quarter \vc played well." In the first quarter, West t(X)k a 5 0 early lead and led 7-6 with three minutes to play, before South Brunswick took command of the game. The Lady Cougars increased their lead to ll) points mid-way through the third quarter before West Brunswick went on a 7-0 run and trimmed the margin to 14 points go ing into the final period. The Lady Trojans got the lead down to nine points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter but couldn't pull any closer. West Brunswick Coach Brenda Council said turnovers, rebounding and missed free throws hurt the Lady Trojans. "Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Council said. "Against good teams like that you can't get away with it." The conference front-runners will meet again Feb. 2X at Boiling Spring Lakes in a game that could decide the league title. "They were good but I didn't think we played out best cither." Council added. "We also made them look good." Iscnbcrg characterized last week's contest as "an intense and physical game. You usually don't see much of that in girls' basketball." South Brunswick was 7-0 in the league and 11-3 overall. West Brunswick was 6- 1 ami 1 3-3. Bell added 13 more points in the fourth quarter to propel West Bruns wick to the 21 -point victory.
