Coming off their only conference loss of the year against Fairmont, the Cougars beat Whileville SI 72 last Tuesday and defeated West Brunswick 74-57 oil Friday. With the victories. South im proved to 6-1 in the Waccamaw 2- A Conference and 14-2 overall- West Brunswick fell to 2-5 in league play and 3-12 overall. McGrifT. the 6-foot- 11 -inch senior center, scored 24 points to lead the South Brunswick attack at West Friday night. Josh White and Kevin Smith each ;iddcd IS for the Cougars. Jerry Reeves led die West Bruns wick Trojans with 15 points, and Adam Johnson scored 1 1 before a packed West Brunswick gym. South Brunswick led the entire game, taking a 20-10 icad in uic fit si quarter and building it to 35-17 at halftimc. SPORTING SCENE Scorpions Have Their Own Brand Of Cameron Crazies Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke University campus is considered one of the toughest places in America to play college basketball. Visiung teams not only cringe at the thought of playing the top-ranked Blue Devils, they find it difficult to play in front of their fans. It's not enough that die Blue Devils arc the defending national champs. It's not enough that they just may be a better team this year than they were last season. Duke also boasts perhaps the rowdiest and most intimidating fans in the country to serve as their "sixth man." The "Cameron Cra/ies," as they're widely known, never let up. They scream, mock, moan, jeer and do their best to break the concentration of op ponents for 40 minutes every game. They paint their laces and bodies blue and white, wear assorted pieces of sporting gixxK on tlieii heads and generally act like fools to help their team win games. Now 1 would never uy to compare Duke's basketball team to the North Brunswick High School squad, but I have noticed that Scorpion Gym has its own brand of "Cameron Cra/ies." For the sake ol argument, let s just caii them the "Leianu Loonies." They don't wear paint or costumes like the Duke fans. But they do have a spccial way of supporting their Scorps. The "Leland Loonies" start doing their thing each game as the Scorpions lake the floor. Their a cappella, rap-like chant let's everyone know the Scorps arc in the house. You really need to hear these guys for yourself. They collectively sing one of those tunes that somehow plays itself over and over again in your head for three days after each game. Trust me. The "Leland Loonies" also have a yell they save for especially exciting moments ? like when one of the Scorps is about to bring down the house with a thunderous dunk. It's a yell that gradually builds as the player streaks down the court and climaxes as the slam occurs. It's usually followed by a chorus of barks and multiple high fives. North Brunswick may be no match for the mighty Duke Blue Devils, but the Scorpions have their own special brand of fans that makes every game there an experience. Playoff Bound? At the mid-way point of the local high school basketball season, it looks like South Brunswick may be the only Waccamaw Conference school that will send both its boys' and girls' teams to the state playoffs. Pending a natural disaster, the Cougars and Lady Cougars are both in good shape to advance to the post-season party. The West Brunswick and Whiteville girls also should be in the playoffs, with South Robeson and West Columbus fighting it out for the final spot. On the boys' side, Fairmont is in the best position to win the conference title. The Golden Tornadoes have yet to lose this year and may be a contender for the state 2-A tide. Alter South Brunswick and East Bladen, the calibcr of play takes a sharp turn for die worse. Whiteville is probably the best of the rest, but West Columbus or West Brunswick could still claim the fourth playoff spot. $ KJ S 1 U1U I.ESLES HPiii UlQRRBn MEL BROOKS GOES FROM HIGH RISE TO LOW DOWN WITH ONE HANDSHAKE! "We executed real well until the game was over, then we got sloppy," he said. "We held them to 17 points in the first half and then we gave up 20 in the third quarter." Poor shooting hurt the Trojans, said West Brunswick Coach Billy Minis. The Trojans were 16 of 33 from the free throw line. Minis said West Brunswick is as good as any team at getting the hall inside and selling up good shots. Making the shot is a different story. "We haven't shot ihc ball well all year," Minis said. "That's hurt us more than anything else." Both teams were oil Tuesday night. South hosts East Bladen on Friday and West hosts Whitcvillc.
