On March 14 Miss Clcmmons will travel to Asheboro to audition for a scat in the North Carolina Juiiidi High Honors Band. She will be competing with 1 1 other top oboe players of her age statewide for two seats in the honors band. North Carolina is divided into six regional band districts. Democrats To Meet At Headquarters The Brunswick County Demo cratic Party Executive Committee meets today (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the party's Headquarters building on U.S. 17 north of Supply. The meeting is open to all inter ested Democrats, said Chairman Crawford Hart. Also, the party's Special Registra tion Committee will meet Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the Head quarters building. New Year Begins Warm And Wet Last month gave Southeastern North Carolina its only bout with snow so far this winter, but managed to remain warmer and wetter than normal. January offered slightiy higher temperatures and more rain than usual, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Average temperature for the month was 47 degrees, which was only 1.4 degrees above normal. 'i"he highest temperature for the month was 69 degrees oil Jan. 14, dipping to the monthly low of 20 only a week later. No record high or low temperatures were set during January. The weather service recorded nine days during the month with temperatures of 32 degrees or lower, compared w ith a normal count of 14 days. Heating degree day units totaled 548 in January, which was 59 units below normal. There were six cool ing degree day units. Precipitation for the month to taled 5.75 inches of liquid, exceed ing the normal count by 2. 1 1 inches. The 1 .4 inches of snow on Jan. 19 was a record snowfall for that date and was the only snow measured during the month. Rain measuring 1.82 inches on Jan. 3 established a new record for that date, beating the previous record of 1.18 inches set in 1930. The weather service recorded measurable rain on 11 days during January, the norm for which is 10.5 days. Daily average wind speed was 8 miles per hour, compared with 9.1 for a normal January. The fastest gust was 39 mph on Jan. 14. Sea level pressure also dipped to the lowest point of the month on Jan. 14 at 29.42 inches sea level as a winter storm passed by to the north. The weather service reported 10 clear days, three partly-cloudy days and 1 8 cloudy days for the month.
