Team Member Advocates Change In Way Schools Teach Science A Brunswick County team has re turned from a conference in Wash ington, D.C., earlier this month with a desire for change, says David Dorsett, in the way science is uiught in the public schools. Dorscu, a senior engineer with Carolina Power & Light's Bruns wick Nuclear Project near South port, attended the the "A Strategy for Change" conference as a partner from industry. Other participants were Carol Midgett, a Southport Pri mary School teacher; Mose Lewis, assistant superintendent for curricu lum; and Gloria Yount, director of staff development. "We heard speeches, reviewed models, played games and brain stormed our way to an understand ing of how our nation's teachers and school administrators can design a curriculum in the future for teaching science," wrote Dorsett in an essay following their return. The process meant learning to set Davis Jewelry and Gifts 50% OFF Everything In Stock 117 Causeway Dr., Occan bit Bach- 579-8800 yjggThuri, Frl., Sat.11-5i aside personal mindsets and develop ing an openness to new ideas, newer, belter and different ways of looking at or doing things, he continued. Today teachers teach students sci ence by using textbooks. Dorsett en visions a change to a hands-on, pra ctical experience method. He also sees the potential for integration of science education with other sub jects such as communications skills, by requiring students to relate their scientific observations on paper. "This can be done. It can be fun," he said. "We all tend to remember things longer when we learn them in a fun way through experimentation and touch." Advocating a change to a hands on approach, he concluded, "Effec tive teaching methods designed to rcach students, allong with our en couragement and support for change, will go a long way in giving our children new educational oppor tunities they so richly deserve." * Southern Living Show-Feb. 22 * Disney/Epcot-Feb. 27-Mar. 1 Underground Atlanta-Mar. 27-29 Washington, DC-April 2-5 Call 754-4222 FOR ALL YOUR TRAVEL NEEDS 1992 Convenient Tours & Travel Books Are Here!
