wick County, Jones was a son of ihc
late James Pearl and Clara Carlisle
Jones. He was preceded in death by
a son, James Carl Jones.

daughters, Barbara Jean Duke of
Bynum and Karen Denise Jones of
Chapel Hill; two sisters, Helen J.
Browning of Ash and Marie Jenrette
of Moncks Comer, S.C.; a brother,
Benny Jones of Port Wcntworth,
Ga.; and a granddaughter.

Minnie Larkins Willis, 101, of
Winnabow died Feb. 12 in Bruns
wick Cove Nursing Center, Lcland.

Mrs. Willis was bom July 3,
1 890, in Pender County, daughter of
the late James T. and Elizabeth
Holmes Williams Larkins. She was
preceded in death by her husband,
Paul Turner Willis, and her son. Paul
Turner Willis Jr.
She was a lifelong member of
First Presbyterian Church of Wil
mington and was retired from At
lantic Coast Line Railroad after 32
years of service.
Her survivors include a niece,
Mrs. Julian K. Taylor of Winnabow,
and two nephews, L. Bradford
Tillery and W. Hampton Tillcry of
Wilmington.
Memorials may be made to the
charity of one's choice.
JAMES BRYAN STANLEY SR.
James Bryan Stanley Sr., 81, of
Charlotte died Feb. 10 at the Vet
eran's Administration Hospital in
Salisbury.
The funeral was held Feb. 13 at
Hankins, Whiuington and Williams
Dearborn Funeral Home in Char
lotte. Burial was in Sharon Memor
ial Park, Charlotte.
Bom in Brunswick County, Stan
ley lived most of his life in Char
lotte, where he was a former magis
trate of Charlotte Township, Mcck
Icnbcrg County.
Stanley was a self-employed
salesman with Stanley Motor Com
pany before his retirement. He was a
U.S. Army mcdical corps veteran of
World War II, a member of Dilworth
Unite*! Methodist Church and a life
time member of Calabash VFW Post
7288.
Among the survivors are his wife.

Sparked Fire
Near Bolivia
A fire that burned about an
acre of woods near Bolivia Sun
day evening apparently started
when some grass caught fire be
neath a car.
Wilbur Verecn, of Route 2,
Bolivia, had driven his AMC
Hornet into a wooded area be
hind his house 011 N.C. 87 near
Danford Road, he told
Brunswick County Sheriff's
Deputy Becky McDonald.
Verecn and his son went there
to check on a creek and left the
car's engine running. Some grass
beneath the car was apparently
touching the exhaust pipe and
caught on fire, Ms. McDonald
reported.
When the Vereens relumed
from the creek, fire had engulfed
the car and was spreading into
the woods. The car, valued ai
SI, 000, was destroyed.
Verecn and his son attempted
to put out the fire, said Ms.
McDonald.
Firefighters from the Bolivia
Volunteer Fire Department and
the N.C. Forest Scrvice respond
ed to put out the blaze around
6:45 p.m.
Close to an acre of woods
burned before it was brought un
der control. No one was injured,
said Ms. McDonald.

Lutheran Church, was born Dec. 4,
1919, in Wilmington, son of the lute
Oscar and Rosa Heath Buck. He was
a U.S. Army veteran of World War
II, having served in France, and re
ceived the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda
Sciltcr Buck of the home; four
daughters, Diane B. Stirewalt of
Wilmington, Nancy B. Coble of
Supply, lane B Pearson of Scons
Hil! and Anita B. Turner of New
Canaan, Conn.; three brothers, New

was an architectural representative

Hughes was a son of the late Luther
and Jessie Coleman Hughes. He was
a U.S. Army veteran and recipient of
five Bronze Star Medals.

Magdalene Smith Hughes; a brother,
Herman Hughes of Ash; three sis
ters, Lundy Watts of Shallottc, and
Beulah Boyd and Wilma Long, both
of Wilmington; and a granddaughter.
