SPORTING SCENE
Everyone Loves
A Winner
Why i;> it uiai everybody ioves a winner?
Why is it that people allow their allegiance to their favorite sports
teams to fluctuate with the fortunes of those teams?
Case in point: Everyone in the S
last fall when the Braves advanced to
the World Series.
Everywhere you went, you could
find people wearing Braves T-shirts
and baseball hats. It seemed like the
whole region was doing the toma
hawk chop in unison.
But where were those people
when the Braves were in the National
League West's cellar the year before?
They may have been silcndy
cheering for the Braves. They might have been catching glimpses of Braves
games on television during the Jeopardy commercial breaks.
But most of them didn't have the courage to admit that, yes, they were
in fact Atlanta Braves fans.
The same concept applies to local high school snnris, only on a much
smaller scale.
Nearly everyone in the greater Shallotte area was a West Brunswick
football fan last season when the Trojans went to the state championship.
Where were those folks during the lean years? One thing's for sure,
most of them weren't waving golden flags or sitting on a frosty set of
bleachers in Elizabethtown watching a football game.
Winning teams seem to attract fans they wouldn't otherwise have. But
what happens when a team is having one of those "rebuilding" years?
Let's look at the high school basketball scene. West Brunswick, by all
accounts, isn't having the best of seasons. In fact, the Trojans arc having a
downright poor season compared to recent years.
You couldn't buy a seat last year at a West Brunswick basketball game.
The Trojans were having their best season in 13 years, and everybody
wanted to see Ricky Daniels play.
This year has been a vasdy different story. The Trojans have struggled
and with very few exceptions, you could have had your pick of seals at any
game this season.
On some occasions, the visiting teams have filled just as many bcnchcs
as the West Brunswick faithful.
I wonder how the Trojans feel when they take the court and see hun
dreds of empty scats. It probably doesn't boost their confidence a whole lot.
The point I'm trying to make here is that real fans will support their fa
vorite team when they arc winning and losing. It's good for the teams and
the fans to go through periods of success and failure.
I like the Philadelphia pro sports teams ? the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers
and Flyers ? even though they haven't won a championship between them
in the last nine years.
I also like West Brunswick. Whether they win every game or lose
every game, I'm sticking with the Trojans.
Fans who only come around and show support when their team is win
ning aren't fans at all. It's when the times arc tough that fan support is
needed the most.
