St. James Episcopal
Sets 'Evening
With Frank King'
An evening of contemporary
Christian music featuring the artistry
of the Rev. Frank King is planned
Friday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at SL James
the Fisherman Episcopal Church in
Shalloue. It is open 10 the public.
The program in Bliss Hall will
feature original musical works of
King, a native of Wilmington and
the rector of Christ Episcopal
Church in Hope Mills.
While King has been writing and
performing for some lime, it is only
in the last two years that he has seri
ously tried to cultivate his God-giv
en talent, said the Rev. Dr. Richard
W. Warner Jr., rector of St. James.
King is proficient with all the
string instruments and has had formal
training on the piano, but no vocal
training, prompting him to describe
the vocal portion of his first cassette
tape as "a real triumph for me".
That first tape, Ju.w Plain
Bear... and then some!, has become
an extension of King's pulpit min
istry. King says he is seldom without
a handful of tapes.
In an interview with the Fayei
leville Observer-Times, he said,
"With the tape I can get to know a
crowd of people and let them experi
ence just a little something. I can
send them home with a tape which
has in it, I believe, some of the ker
nel of the Christian message that
God loves us, no matter what."
The title song. Just Plain Bear ,
was inspired about a year ago by his
son, Joshua, who had heard a tape of
his father's earlier musical efforts and
wanted King to write a song for him.
The result is a simple tale, in a
folk -country style, about a little buy

But like, most of the other songs
King offers, there's more. Just Plain
Bear is also about the importance of
relationships and friendships.
Images of love, family, father
hood and grace permeate the 10
songs on the cassette. These include
Johnny's Lullaby , Just Let Go, Love
All Over, Welcome Home, Oh
Robert, The Tears Fail, New Baby
Too and Emmaus Way. The 10th ti
tle, Daddy's Here, is the artist's own
favorite, a song about a father ex
plaining God's love to his child.
In a reflection of his own ministry,
King sings of God, revealing him as
the heavenly Father, provider of re
assuring love and the greater healer.
"The hallmark of my ministry is
healing brokeness," says King.
"God desires for us to be whole and
a lot of my songs represent that."
He says his music is "a creative
endeavor that is an expression of life
as I sec it. My wish is that some
body would hear smething in one of
the songs they might identify with".
"An Evening with Frank King"
will begin with desserts served by
parish members. Donations of S5
per person, S8 per couple or S10 per
family are requested, with proceeds
going to the St. James building fund.
