Girls Making
History In Hoops
West Brunswick versus South Brunswick.
The cross-county rivalry has been brewing for years on the local high
school sporting scene.
The Trojans and Cougars have waged w ar in football, basketball, base
ball, tennis and even soccer tins past '
fall.
Never before, though, have the
two county schools been so competi
tive in girls' basketball.
After tying for second place in
the Waceamaw 2-A Conference last
year, the Lady Cougars and l.adv
Trojans have dominated the league
this season.
South Brunswick entered this ,
week's play sporting an unblemished 12-0 conference record.
West Brunswick carried a 10-2 conference mark into the final week of
the regular season.
South Brunswick was leading the conference, while the Lady Trojans
were lied with Whiteville for second place in the league.
The final standings arc still up in the air. But South Brunswick's girls
certainly have the inside track to the conference championship.
The l-ady Cougars will have to go through the Waccamaw's best this
week to finish the regular season at 14-0.
They had a Tuesday night date with the Lady Woifpack in Wniieviiic
and will finish the league slate with a home game against West Brunswick
Friday.
Local high school girls' basketball has come a long way the last couple
of years with Mike Iscnbcrg coaching at South Brunswick and Brenda
Council at the West Brunswick helm.
Just two short seasons ago, the Lady Trojans were 7-7 and South
Brunswick finished with a 4-10 confcrcnce record. The two county teams
won just live league games between them in 1989.
On Friday night, they'll baule for the county championship and possi
bly much more. For South Brunswick, a perfect season or the conference ti
tle will be on the line.
South Brunswick's gym will undoubtedly be packed tomorrow night
when the potent Cougars face the struggling Trojans in boys' basketball.
But most tans will miss the best game of the night if they don't get to
the gym early to sec the girls play.
Shrine Bowl Sticks
Shrine Bowl officials decided last week to stick with the traditional
date for the annual all-star football game between high school seniors from
North and South Carolina.
South Carolina's High School Football Coaches Association had asked
that the date be changed from the second weekend in December to the third
weekend for two reasons.
First of all, the coaches wanted it changed because North Carolina
holds its lour state championship games the second weekend in December.
That usually means that some of the lop Tarheel seniors don't get to
showcase their talents in the Shrine Bowl.
West Brunswick's Jimmy Grissett, for instance, turned down his Shrine
Bowl invitation last year in order to play with the Trojans in ihe state 2-A
title game.
South Carolina coachcs also wanted the Shrine Bowl dale changed so
they could hold iheir annual North-South All-Star Game in Myrtle Beach
the second weekend in December.
Ihe request for the new dale was turned down, which apparently suits
most North Carolina coachcs just line. The N.C. High Schix>l Fool ball
Coachcs Association hail asked thai the Shrine Bowl stick with the tradi
tional date.
Ihey apparently feel that adding yet another week to an already
lengthy lootball season would do more harm than good. They're probably
right

North's Jones Leads County At State Tourney

nameni over the weekend in
Greensboro.
Jones, county wrestler ol ihc year
last season, won lour of his five
matches on Friday and Saturday to
finish third in the 112-pound weight
class.
The North Brunswick senior was
named 10 the all-state team along
with teammate Keith Bullock, who
placed fourth in the I2f> pound divi
sion.
Scorpion Coach Mike Dumas said
ii was the second consecutive year
that Jones was named to the all-state
team. He finished second in the stale
at 103 pounds last year.
Jones pinned Joe Randall of New
ton-Conover and Brian Leller ol
North Slanly in his first two matchcs
before losing a 3-2 decision to Ritz
Etter of Albemarle for his only lose
of the tournament.
Jones came back in the consola
tion round to win a decision over
Robert Martin of Thomasvilie. He
pinned Dale Allen ol Dixon in the
consolation final.
In the 125-pound division. Bul
lock pinned Jason Connelly of
Owen in his first match, bui then
lost to Russell Walker of West
Wilkes.
In the consolation round. Bullock
pinned Jodie Collins of East David
son and Scott Pendill of Manteo.
He also decisioned Bcnjy Hayes
of Mount Airy before losing a deci
sion to Mark Sullivan of Northwest
Ashe.
North Brunswick's Brian Cook
finished seventh in the 119-pound
weight class, losing his linal match

David Gregory rolled a 192 lor
the men's high game. Jonathan Mc
Lco<l rolled 191 and Gerry Simoni
had 190.
The "Emerald Adventures" rolled
the high team handicap game of
860. "Slip N & Slide N" hail the
high scratch game with 690, high
scratch series with 1,890 and high
handicap series with 2,394.
Woodmen League
Audrey Rcdwinc rolled a 197 for
the women's high game in the Wixxl
men of the World League last Friday

Other women rolling high games
included Betty Hewctl with 194 and
Ginny An/clone with 184.
David Banish had the high men's
game with 237. Other high rollers
were James Hcweu, 214; Steve
Reynolds, 213; Waddell Evans, 213;
and Bob Flucgci, 205.
Redwine also rolled the women's
high scratch series with 498.
Anzelone bowled a 481 scratch sc
ries, and Hcwctt rolled 469.
Bowling high scratch scries
among the men were Barush, 597;
Waddell Evans, 591; Hcweu, 570;
Reynolds, 536; Dick An izelonc, 527;
and Flucgci, 523.
Redwine rol loci a 648 for the
women's high handicap series. Hcw
ctt bowled a 601 handicap series.
Barush led the men with a high
handicap scries of 711. Other high
scores were Hcwctt, 654; Evans,
651; Huegel, 646; Reynolds, 638;
Ron Hernandez, 631; Roy Lewis,

Dumas said North Brunswick's
Casey McBridc lost both of his
matchcs by decision in the 135
pound division.
"For a freshman, I really think he
did a super job," Dumas said. "He
came out of nowhere in the regional
to qualify for the state."
West Brunswick, which won the
county championship and finished
fourth at the Fast Regionals last
weekend, picked up two ninth place
finishes ai the state tournament.
Senior Gary Jones placed ninth in
the 1 30-pound weight class, and ju
nior Trey Hickman was ninth at IS')
pounds.
The three other Trojan wrestlers
who qualified lor the state tourna
ment lost their lirst two matches.
They were Drew Johnson at 103
pounds, Eric Audreis at 145 pounds
and Elbert Johnson at 152 pounds.
Coach J (ic Noble said the touma
ment atmosphere probably affected
the wrestlers, who were competing
for the first time in the Greensboro
Coliseum.
Noble said there were nine mats
on the llixir and 627 wrestlers at the
tournament. "We jusi diuu'i wrestie
aggressively. I think the moment
kind of got to them."
South Brunswick Coach Jix'
Rossclli said he was pleased wuh
the performance of his three juniors
who qualified for the state tourna
ment.
Ty Haughn finished seventh at
130 pounds. Phillip Craven placed
ninth at 160 pounds and Craig Fra/
ier finished 11th at 171 pounds.
"They all went beyond where I
thought they would go," Rossclli
said. "The all won at least one match
at states which is the goal we set lor
their first time there."
