Public Speaking Competitors Seven students representing four middle schools competed in a county vide public speaking contest Feb. 2S at Shallotte Middle School, sponsored by the Brunswick Soil and Water Conservation District. Head Start Centers Taking Applications For Preschool Four-Counly Community Ser vices Inc. of Laurinhurg is seeking applications for 1992-93 admission to local Head Start preschool cen ters, which serve economically dis advantaged families. The free program assists low- in come children ages 3 to 5 in devel oping social competence. Classes run from S a.m. to 4 p.m. and break fast. lunch and a snack are provided. Activities include number, color and shape recognition, art, music and dance. Teachers work to in crease youngsters' attention spans. A typical classroom includes one teacher and an educational assistant working with 20 children, helped by volunteers and foster grandparents. Head Start children also receive completed physical examinations and health screenings, dental exami nations and treatment, and spccch and occupational therapy, if needed. The program also has the services of an occupational therapist, speech pathologist and coordinators in the areas of disabilities, education, social services and parent involvement, health and nutrition and literacy. Last year 991 children were served in 47 classrooms over a six county area served by Four-County, a news release indicated. Vacancies are to be filled by July. Before a child can enter the program he or she must have a physical ex amination, tuberculin skin test and immunizations. Spring registration will be held Tuesday, March 10, at Brunswick Community College's main campus north of Supply from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the ALS building. The college advises students who plan to enroll for a specific program to complete the ASSET, a student success/orientation program. It will be offered Monday. March 9, and Wednesday, March 1 1 , at 9 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. The ASSET will also be available Tuesday, March 10, at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and Sign Up March 1 0 For BCC Classes Thursday. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS White To Participate In Geographic Society Bee James White of Ash. an eighth grader at Wac camaw Elem entary School, was recently se lected to partici pate in the statewide geog raphy bee March 27 in Durham. White, son of James and Stella WHITfc White, was the sch(*>l winner from Waccamaw in December, said his social studies teacher, Mary K. Griffith. His written test, provided anil graded by the National Geographic Society, was selected as one of the top 102 test scores out of 9(X) North Carolina participants. If White makes it past the state fi nals, he will compete in the national bee in Washington, D.C. in May. Joins Program Karen Faye Stanaland has been named as a new freshman partici pant in the N.C. State University Scholars Program, which provides special educational experiences for acadcmicaily talented students. Ms. Stanaland. daughter of Doug las and Diana Stanaland of Cala bash, is studying Agriculture and Life Scicnccs and has a grade point average in the top 10 percent of her school. Earns Promotion Shawn L. Bryant was recently promoted to the rank of senior air man in the U.S. Air Force. The son of John and Debbie Bryant of Bolivia, he is a Morse sys tems operator at Wheeler Air Force Base, Hawaii, and graduated from South Brunswick High School in 1988. Student Teaching Two Brunswick County residents are conducting student teaching as signments in area high schools as part of their course work in East Car olina University's School of Edu cation. Christina M. Register of Shallotte is teaching English at Greenville Central High School, Snow Hill. Richard K. Chaisson of Leland is assigned to D.H. Conlcy High School in Pitt County, also teaching English.
