STATION ATTEND/NT Jackie llinson of Waste Industries stands
beside one of the largi recycling containers in place at the transfer
station off Hale Swan 9 Road. All three county transfer stations are
accepting glass, aluninum cans and newspapers for recycling,
with more locations couing later this year.
County Opens Recycling
Centers At Three Sites
Brunswick County's thrcl trans
fer stations arc acccpting avmited
assortment of items for rccyclbg.
Last week, containers were set up
at the stations, which arc loc^cd in
Leland, Southport and off Hale
Swamp Road between ShallotU and
Ocean Isle Beach.
Items being acccpted arc dfcar,
green and brown glass, alumi^im
cans and newspapers without in
serts, said Randy Gainey, brafch
manager with Waste Industries, tic
county's new solid waste collection
contractor.
"A lot of people don't knov
we've got recycling yet," Jackit
Hinson, attendant at the Halt
Swamp road station, said Monday. \
"Most of the people I've talked
with say they're really glad we start
ed this," he added.
The county's contract with Waste
Industries tails for the operation of
10 recycling stations at a cost of
S63.600 annually. Overall, the con
tract is worth S561.082 per year to
handle residential garbage and rccy
clablcs.
Brunswick County Manager
David Clcgg said the county will
hire a recycling coordinator within
the next few weeks. He said Waste
Industries will open more recycling
centers to meet the required 10.
"I would expect to see that occur
ring," said Clegg. "There's obvious
ly going to be a transition."
Most communities have been
without recycling centers for several
months.
Eight recycling stations were
forced to close last year after hauler
George Bush of Florence, S.C.,
pulled his trailers out of Brunswick
County. He said the market for ma
terials was down and that he was
losing money.
Centers remained open at Sunset
Beach and at Southport.
Hinson said the recycling bins arc
designed for self-service, but that he
assists recyclers soit items into the
proper containers and tries to make
sure people disposing of household
waste know about the recycling ser
vice.
The transfer stations, which also
accept most household waste but no
"white goods," batteries or construc
tion debris, arc open from 8 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Consumers will not sec an imme
diate increase in the variety of items
accepted for recycling.
Gaincy said the resale market for
other rccyclablcs is "dead" right now,
but that he expects the county to be
|in accepting plastics at a later time.
