South Lady Cougars Top Whiteville For Waccamaw Tourney Championship BY DOUG RUTTKR South Brunswick's Lady Cougars made critical free throws in the final minutes to beat Whitcvillc 47-43 in the Waccamaw Conference tourna ment final Friday night at Boiling Spring Lakes. Led by senior guard Alison Cum bec, South Brunswick made seven of 10 foul shots in the last three min utes to hold off the top- seeded Lady Wolfpack. With the victory, the Lady Cougars earned the first girls' bas ketball championship in school his tory and a bye in the opening round of the state playoffs. "This feels great," Coach Mike Iscnberg said after the game. "We felt like if we could beat their press we could get a lot of points in the half court." South Brunswick had trouble beating Whitcvillc 's full-court press early in the game. The Lady Wolf pack came up with four steals out of the press in the first quarter and took a 13-10 lead. After falling behind 17-10 early in (lie second period, South's Lady Cougars rallied with 10 straight points to take a 20-17 lead. White - villc responded with a 6-0 run of its own and had a 23-22 lead at halltimc. South Brunswick opened the sec ond half with a 9-2 run to take a 31 25 lead, hut Whitcville came back again and cut the margin to 31-30 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Cougars rebuilt their lead to six points early in the quarter before Whiicville trimmed it to three points with 3:29 remaining. South Brunswick then rnsdc four of six free throws to take a 44-37 lead with 1:18 to play. But the tena cious Lady Wolfpack pulled to with 45-43 with 30 seconds left. Cumbec made both ends of a onc and-one with 20 seconds remaining to give South Brunswick its final margin of victory. Erika Bryant led the Lady Cougars with 17 points. Tasha Sell ers and Cumbcc each scored 10 for South Brunswick. Senior center Beverly McCray scored 17 to lead Whiteville. and Tonya Jones chippcd in iu points. South Brunswick had advanced to lite tournament final with wins over West Brunswick and East Bladen. The Lady Cougars pulled away from West in the second half for a 56-36 win in semifinal action last Thursday after knocking off East Bladen 69-40 in the opening round on Monday. The senior center scored 28 points to lead the Lady Wolfpack to a 79 21 victory over North Brunswick in first-round action last Monday. South Brunswick, Whiicville and West Brunswick tied for the regular season conference championship wiih 12-2 icconis. Numbers were drawn from a hat to determine seed ings in the tournament. The Lady Cougars were to open the state 2-A playoffs Wednesday night in Whileville. They were to play either the second seed from the Central Tar Heel Conference or the third seed from the Capital Area Conference. West Lady Trojans Fall To Northwood In Playoffs BY DOUG R UTTER West Brunswick's Lady Trojan basketball team caine up two points short against North wood in the opening round of the slate 2-A play offs Monday night at Fuquay Va rina. After falling behind early. West Brunswick came back and took the lead late in the fourth quarter before Northwood went on to post a 48-46 victory. The number three seed in the Central Tar Heel Conference jump ed on the Lady Trojans early. West Brunswick Coach Brenda Council said Northwood converted six West turnovers into baskets to start the game with a 12-0 run. Coach Council said the three-hour bus ride to Fuquay Varina hurt the Lady Trojans. "!t had a lot to do with it. We were just real flat the first half." Northwood led 17-7 after the first quarter and increased its lead to 27 15 at halftime. Council said West Brunswick played better in the second half. The Lady Trojans trimmed Northwood's lead to 38-30 going into the fourth quarter. West Brunswick's Christy King nailed a three-point shot with two minutes remaining to give the Lady Trojans their first lead of the game, 46-45. Northwood regained the lead on an offensive rebound and pul-back, and later made one of two free throws for the final margin of victo ry Monica King led the Lady Trojans with 21 points, and Christy King added 16 for West Brunswick. Mandy Poe led Northwood with 19 points, and Danielle Harrington chipped in with 12 points. The Lady Trojans, who tied with South Brunswick and Whiteville for the regular-season conference cham pionship, finished the year at 20-6. "We had a real good season," Council said Tuesday. "We were much better than that team last night. We just didn't play ball." The game was a grudge match of sorts. West had beaten the Lady Cougars 47-45 six days earlier to earn a share of the conference cham pionship. "I think last week West wanted it more and that made the difference," South Brunswick Coach Mike Isenberg said following the game. "When the teams are this evenly matched a lot of limes it's just who wants it worse. It was just our turn." Isenberg's game plan, to work the hall inside on offense and prevent West Brunswick from penetrating, worked to perfection. South's twin towers, Erika Bryant and Jennifer Fullwood, combined for 37 points in the paint. Bryant led all scorers with 19, de spite sitting out most of the second quarter after picking up her third foul. Fullwood chipped in IX points. The Lady Cougars went on a 9-0 run early in the first quarter and look a 13-9 advantage into the sccond pe riod. South's guards repeatedly beat West Brunswick's trapping defense and passed under ihc hoop for easy baskets. After West's Tikila Morgan con verted a three-point play lo pull ihe Lady Trojans to wilhin 15-14, South rebuilt its lead with a 6-0 run. The Lady Cougars led 25-20 at halflime and pulled away in the third quarter. Guard Stacie Isenberg scored two straight baskets to start a 13-0 run, which turned a close game into a rout South Brunswick led 42-27 after three quarters. West pulled to within 13 points early in the fourth quarter but never got any closer. Christy King and Catherine Bell scored 11 points each to lead the Lady Trojans, who had advanced to the semifinals with a 5344 win over Fairmont in the opening round.
