Council sent tin- latest version of the town's sign ordi
nance back to the planning board for more revisions.

joint workshop at 4:30 p.m Thursday, March 19. at the
town hall to discuss the sign ordinance as well as state
I Vpartmcnt of Transportauon road standards.
Sunset Beach currently hits a sign ordinance, but is in
the process of updating that document.
At a hearing prior to the council's Marvh 2 meeting,
a provision that regulates the height of a sign outside ol a
single-establishment lot drew the most criticism.
I"he restriction states that the lop of a sign may be no
more than six feet from the ground.
AI Morrison, a local business owner, told the council
and planning txwd that such a restriction is "creating a
hardship for people that need to advertise."
Cliff Errikson, another business owner, said that cer
tain vans and large four-wheel drive automobiles easily
obscure a six-foot sign.
One such car he measured was 68 inches tall, he
said, which would unfairly block a sign from passing
motorists.
His pa-sent sign measures eight feet by three and a
half feet, which he said works well for him.
Another part of the ordinance restricts signs advertis
ing events to three weeks prior ami one week after the
event.
Sea Trail Plantation has a sign visible year-round that
advertises the annual North Carolina Oyster Festival.
Dean Walters, spokesman for the golf community,
said such ;in event brings more than 25,000 visitors to
the area and that he opposes restricung the amount of
time Sea Trail can have the sign up.
The planning board plans to have a new draft of the
ordinance ready for public consideration soon.
Turtle Awareness
A letter from Sunset Beach to state Rep. David
Rcdwine will ask that the town be designated as a turtle
sanctuary.
Minnie Hunt, spokesperson for the Brunswick
County Turtle Watch Program, asked die council to
make the request of the legislator, so that he could intro
duce the necessary legislation.
State wildlife conservation agencies would put up
signs around the town announcing that Sunset Beach is
an official turtle sanctuary, but no other changes should
take puaCC.
The signs, Ms. Hunt said, are simply to "heighten
public awareness" about the delicate nature of turtles and
their habitats.
No funding or special regulations will be made for
the town, she said, but hopefully more people will learn
that turtles should be regarded with care.
Ms. Hunt also presented a plaque on behalf of the
Brunswick County Turtle Watch Program to Sunset
Beach Police Chief J.B. Buell.
The plaque recognizes help received by program
members from Sunset Beach police officers when trying
to locate newly-hatched baby turtles.
Turtle watchers annually help baby turtles back into
the ocean and away from roads and parking lots where
they arc often killed.

Sunset Residents To Help

and comment on land use issues.
Later in March, Ms. Fluegel

Those results will be announced at a

I JOB Wants Equal Payments For Latest Water Project
BY TERRY POPK
Property owners in 10 subdivi
sions between Occan Isle Beach and
Calabash may pay the same assess
merit i or county water lines.
The Brunswick County Utility
Operations Board voted unanimous
ly Monday to recommend that coun
ty commissioners charge each of the
776 parcels of land in SAD 12 the
same figure, the cost of the project
divided equally.
SADs arc areas where property
owners arc charged the cost for run
ning water lines into neighborhoods
next to existing main lines. In all but
one previous SAD, property owners
have been charged a calculated fee
based on either the size of their lot
or the amount of road frontage.
The UOB broke from that tradi
tion hist month when it recommend
ed that residents of Sea Aire Estates
and Styron's Landing. SAD 16, be
charged on a per lot basis.
Public Utilities Director Jerry
Webb said he won't have a cost for
SAD 12 until next week and doesn't
yet know what the assessment will
be. The work is expected to come in
under budget, he added.
"From an administrative stand
point, it's easiest," said Webb, of the
per lot basis.
Under other payment methods,
many property owners request their
assessments be recalculated to check
for errors, he said, tying up workers'
lime.
But not all lots are the same size.
The big question is, said UOB mem
ber Robert Nubel, "Is someone be
ing put upon, or is someone else get
ting a break?"
In SAD 12, most of the lots with
in subdivisions are generally the
same size, said Webb. The project
doesn't contain any large tracts or
parcels that can later be subdivided
by the owner.
The 10 subdivisions were com
bincd into one !?.rgc SAO to
money and to make water available
more quickly.
"We're looking at situations now
where it's possible for the per parcel
basis to be the fairest method," said
A1 Morrison, UOB chairman. "I'd
like to get it to where we can go in
and say, 'This is what it's going to
be.'"
Carmichacl Construction Co. is
busy lapping residents onto SAD 12
lines, said Webb, and should be
complete in three to four weeks.
At community meetings, SAD 12
residents were told of the different
methods used to fund water projects.

will be charged for water lines there
based on the size of the lots.
The 19 parcels of land arc owned
by nine people, said Webb. Lots
vary in size from 83,793 square feet
to 19,725 square feet.
If charged on a per lot basis, the
58,919 projcct would cost each
property owner $524.69.
Under the square footage method,
payments will range from a low of
$394 to a high of SI, 675, said
Webb, or .02 per square foot.
The board had also considered a
road frontage cost of S3.85 per lin
ear foot, with bills ranging from a
low of $466 to a high of S 1 ,092.
Residents in Jennifer have suf
fered from gasoline contaminated
wells due lo leaking underground
tanks in the area. The state gave
Brunswick County a grant to help
install a water line from the Malmo
treatment plant to the subdivision.
A public hearing will be held on
the project April 13 at 5:30 p.m.
Sherrow Kstates
In other business, the board set a
public hearing for May 1 1 on a pro
posed SAD for the Sherrow Estates
subdivision just north of Shallottc
off of U.S. 17.
There arc 136 loLs in the subdivi
sion under development by Luke
Fulford, who has submitted engi
neering plans on the water project to
the county at no charge.
Residents there have submitted a
petition asking for county water.
