CEDAR GROVE AREA NEWS Aunt Gerfie' Finds A Way BY BARBARA T. IIKWKTT The hum of tractors cutting gar g den soil can be heard across the Cedar Grove Community these days, just one of the signs that it will soon be time for spring planting. SL^s Vs. hFor man,y ?f ihc unemployed HE WEI I ;inj spniQ, /.ens. preparing garden plots has tak en precedence over the silting and sunbathing that had filled many win ter noondays and afternoons. "Aunt Gcrti," or Gertrude Ri chardson of Turkey Trap Road is getting ahead in the planting game. Her onions, white potatoes and salad greens arc already two inches tall and gaining another fraction of an inch each day, it seems. She amazes everyone with her "green thumb mania," which has led her lo find a way to get her gardening under way despite a handicap caused by chronic leg ami feci problems. !n fact, she has directed the early work of the garden from a wheel chair position, only using her car for that purpose. With the window rolled down, she direcLs her ne phews, Reginald Lofton Hewett and Collis Hewett II, on how deep and how far apart to plant the rows of vegetables she desires. Other gardeners can claim firsts in germinating sweet peas, lima beans or corns, but not this unique way of getting the job done. Comings And (i<>ings Collis Hewett recently enjoyed a trip to Atlantic City, N.J. He motored by car and tells of an interesting time sightseeing. He was fascinated by the many changes that have taken place since he last trav eled to the Mid-Atlantic states near ly 15 years ago.
