Offic ers Association Board of Directors March 9 in Greensboro. Hewett, a lieutenant with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department, will HEWET I represent the state's southeastern district, one of eight in the state. D.A.R.E. is an acronym for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It teaches children to develop positive attitudes and behaviors. More than 900 fifth-graders have graduated from the 17- week pro gram in Brunswick County since it started in 1990. Another 300 will graduate in May. Hewett, a county native, is a grad uate of West Brunswick High School and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has served with the sheriff's department since 1983 and was pro moted to lieutenant in June 1990 to coordinate the D.A.R.E. program. Wants To Teach Doris Reiner, a math major from Bolivia, is one of five students at Catawba College in Salisbury tutor ing students this semester at Naz areth Children's Home three times a week. Tutoring is a service project of die Teacher Education Association at Catawba, of which Ms. Reiner is a member. She wants to teach high school math, a vocational choice she terms "premeditated poverty" while ac knowledging she isn't going into the teaching profession for money. "1 had a teacher in high school who said the reason she went into teaching was becausc of immortali ty." said Reiner in a news release from the college. "She gave a part of herself to every student who came through her classroom that's going to live on forever. "I think 1 kind of feci that way, Ux>." Ward Makes List Clawson Ward of Route 1, Long wood, has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Horry Georgetown Technical College in Conway, S C. Ward, 51, is studying hotel man agement technology at the college. He had a ,V6 grade point average for the quarter. Harrison Decorated Staff Sgt. Walter R. Harrison has been decorated with the Army Com mendation Medal. The medal is awarded to those in dividuals who demonstrate outsiand ing achievement or meritorious ser vice in the performance of their du ties. Harrison, the son of Ariencic Har rison of Route 1, Ash, is a counter signals intelligence officer at Fort Shafter, Honolulu. Earns Degree Sherry Stout-Stewart received a master of arts degree in math education Dec. 17 from Fayette ville State Uni versity in Fay ctteville. She attained a 4.0 grade point average for her final semester of studies. NCCU Touring Choir Plans April 10 Concert Here The North Carolina Central Uni versity Touring Choir will present a concert Friday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Public Assembly Build ing at the Brunswick County Gov ernment Center in Bolivia. The touring choir has distin guished itself as one of the country's outstanding university ensembles, according to a news release, per forming from an extensive repertoire of sacred and secular music of vari ous styles and periods. The choir is compose of students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Business at the university. The 41-voice en semble includes two students from Brunswick County, sophomores Ta nia M. Butler of Shallotte, a sopra no, and Sherwin Keith Bryant of Lc land, a bass. Within the last two seasons, the choir performed conccrts with the New Harlem Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The choir performs frequendy through out North Carolina and the South. Its annual spring tours have in cluded performances along the East Coast, the Midwest and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Waccamaw Elementary Student Wins Poster Contest Waccamaw Elementary student Ladrinda McKeithan won first place and was named overall fifth-grade winner in the "Recycle, Don't Waste" poster contest sponsored by the Brunswick County Health De partment and the N.C. Public Health Association March 9. Other winners were Carmen Hickman, Shallotte Middle, second place and overall fourth-grade win ner, while Camille Wilir.euth and Ryan Walherware, both of Shallotte Middle, tied for third place. School Bus Driver Training Offered At South Brunswick A school bus driver course will be held March 25 through 27 at South Brunswick High School for individ uals interested in becoming school bus drivers with the Brunswick County Board of Education.
