Fred Bradley Scholarship Tourney A Great Legacy Coach Fred Bradley of West Brunswick High School lost a long and courageous balllc with cancer last year. It was one of the few battles he ever lost. His stay with us was all too short for those he coached and those who knew liim. Fred was a player's coach, a coach's coach and a man's man. His footprints have long since disap peared from the turf in M. H. Rourke Stadium, but his spirit lingers there in the turf, the lime and the lights. His indomitable character, love of com petition, and respect for athletes arc blueprints for all who follow. As lot lives. I can think of no greater tribute to Coach Bradley than the golfing event being held this Sunday for the Fred Bradley Scholarship Fund. In the two years past, a tournament was held at Sea Trail Plantation to raise funds for Fred's medical and family expenses. They were both great successes. Marshall Scay. our outstanding football coach, and Michael Hobbs have joined forces with many boosters anil supporters in the community to con ceive a scholarship in Fred's name for students at West Brunswick. A Captain's Choice At Lockwood Links This year's tournament, which will be held ai Lockwood Golf Links, is the first step to institutionalize the Fred Bradley Scholarship. Support is pouring in from both North and South Carolina in the form of sponsors, players, door prizes, and donations. The quantity and quality of the support from South Carolina for all of Fred's tournaments arc tributes to the respect and love of his supporters from schools where he coached prior to joining the West Brunswick Staff. The tournament will be a Four-Man Captain's Choice format with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 22. Lockwood is a great course for a compcUtivc event of any kinu, bui is esjHxiaiiy weii suited for liie cap tain's choice format. The field will be limited to the first 32 teams to get their entry fee in to Michael Hobbs at Ocean Boulevard West, Holden Bcach, N. C.; Attention: Fred Bradley Golf Tournament Trophies, Door Frizes And A rig rickin' The $50 per player entry fee will cover all the costs for golf, carts, prizes and a pig picking after the tournament. Free snacks and beverages will be provided to players on the course along with two side events: a near est the pin contcst, and a beat the pro contest. The field will compete in three flights with trophies going to both first and second place teams in each flight. An array of door prizes is already on board to add spice to the event. I don't know about you, but 1 never enter these evenLs with the hope of winning a trophy. 1 just hope I can get one of those exciting door prizes. Take Cover, Here Comes " Lefty " And His Musketeers That will be particularly true in Fred's tournament since I am playing on a team with a former tennis coach, a cigar chomping science tcachcr, and a former professional, left-handed baseball pitcher. As for my game, the last competitive golf 1 have played was in the Brierwood Member-Guest last fall. So it you sec our lean, coming your vvay, get out the riot gear and ?\aiCii out for flying missiles. If you think they had it bad in Saudi Arabia, you ain't seen nothing yet. The last time our group got together, we scared the deer out of the woods and the refreshment girls off the golf course. Don't tell "Lefty" what I have said, he is still crowing about winning the nearest the pin contcst at last year's tournament. If you enjoy fun, food, fellowship and some golf to boot, this tourna ment w ill certainly meet your needs. Lots of guys and gals arc working hard to make it an event to remember. If the date does not suit your calendar, I know they would be willing to accept your donation to a very worthy cause in honor of a great coach. His spirit lives!
