Three Men Fined $200 Each For Taking Rare Venus's Flytraps Three men charged with taking Venus's flytraps, a rare and protect ed plant, front the grounds of Orton Plantation pleaded guilty in Bruns wick County District Court last week. Venus's flytraps are rare, insect cating plants w ith leaves that lorm an insect trap. North Carolina laws protect them for they arc only found in the Green Swamp and other wet lands within a 75-mile radius of Wilmington. In the spring, the plants produce a rising stent of blossoms that makes them easier for poachers to spot. Plants retail at garden shops for around $6 each. Illegal poaching has threatened the species and has led to stricter penalties for stealing them from pri vate property or protected areas. The minimum fine is SKX) for a first of fense and S500 for a second offense while the maximum penally is a SI ,000 fine in either case.
