HINES AWAITS SUPERIOR COURT SENTENCING West Student Pleads Guilty To Misdemeanor Death By Vehicle BY TERRY POPK A NVcst Brunswick High School student charged in a tauil accident last May pleaded guilty in Brunswick County Superior Court last week to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. William Russell Mines Jr.. 17, of Shallotte, was giv en a prayer for judgment continued in the case by Judge Joe Freeman Britt until the July 13 session of Superior Court. Mines, a senior at West, will await sentencing unit! that date George Daniels, a popular student and Trojan foot ball star, died in the May 14 near head-on collision on Old Shallotte Road (S.R. 1316). He was a passenger in Mines' ll>87 Ma /ila pickup truck that collided with a Ford pickup driven by Philip Allan Fulwood. The Daniels family has filed a wrongful death com plaint in Brunswick County Superior Court claiming the two drivers were "playing chicken" when die accident happened. Mines and Daniels, friends and classmates at West Brunswick, were on their way to school when the w reck occurred. In September, District Court Judge Jcrr> A. Jolly found Mines guilty on charges of death by vehicle and driving left of center and sentenced him to two years in prison. The defendant's attorney, James Payne of Shallotte, appealed the case to Superior Court. Judge Britt also heard the following eases for the pc nod March 16-20: ?Godfrey Hankins, 27, of Route 2, Supply, pleaded guilt> to five counts ol sale ol cocaine, charges consoli dated. sentenced to It) years in prison, recommended work release, pay restitution of $440 to Brunswick County Sheriff's Department narcotics division and $450 attorney fees. ?Joseph Burton Gcrritsen. 23, ol Hillsborough, was found guilty hy a jury on driving while impaired charge, sentenced to 60 days in jail, suspended for 12 months, placed on special probation, lined $100, given a 24-hour active jail term, ordered to serve 24 hours community service and to not operate a motor vehicle for 30 days, to surrender North Carolina driver's license, submit to as sessment, pay court cost and community service fee. ?Alexander Adams, 42, ol Route 4, Lcland. asked that a suspended sentence be activated for probation violation, two years in prison, pay S50 attorney fee. ?Edward Mcars. 38. of Blue Banks Road, Lcland. ad mitted a probation violation, sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay $100 attorney lee. ?James Dowc, 23, of Mt. Misery Road, Lcland, pleaded guilty to sale of cocaine, sentenced to three years in pnson, not to benefit as a committed youthful offender and ordered to pay SI 50 attorney fee. ?John Lester Flo\d. 30, ol Route 6, Shallotte, was found not guilty by a jury of a driving while impaired charge. ?Ernest Paul Evans III, 21, of Route 2, Bolivia, pleaded no contest to taking big game during closed season and failure to wear bla/e orange, received a prayer for judg ment continued and was fined S25. ?Ottis Lorenzo Hill, 21, of Route 2, Shallottc, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, sentenced to 30 months in prison, not to benefit as a committed youthful offend er and ordered that a weapon be turned over to the Shallottc Police Department, work release not recom mended ordered to pay court costs and $200 attorney Ice. ?John Wesley Haircloth Jr., 28. of Route 4, Lumbcrion, pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and conspira cy to possess marijuana, sentenced to 59 months in prison with woik release recommended on the posses sion charge and ordered to pay court costs; sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years and placed on four years' special probation, given a six-month ac tive sentence at the expiration of the first count, ordered to pay S225 attorney Ice. ?Felix lrvin Edge, 20, of Route I. Winnabow, pleaded no contest to a crime against nature charge, sentenced to five years in prison, recommended not benefit as a com mitted youthful offender, pay court cost and $700 attor ney fee. ?Robert Mitchcll Evans Jr., 17, of Route 5. Lcland, asked that a probationary sentence be activated, not benefit as a committed youthful offender, pay S50 attorney fee. ?Roy Lee Lcadbcttcr Jr., 25, of Fiddler's Creek Apartments, South port, pleaded no contest to misde meanor possession of marijuana, sentenced to two years in piiMni, suspended fvn four years, placed OR four years' supervised probation, ordered to pay court costs and S350 attorney fee. ?Rodney K. Suggs, 24, of Route I. The money will be used lo fi nance an engineering analysis of the wood structural system of the Old Baldy Lighthouse on the island, a news release from Congressman Charlie Rose's office states. Grants arc financed by the Na tional Trust's Preservation Services Fund for maritime projects and a gift from Mrs. Damon R. Avcrill of Brevard Money is used to establish the Terence L. Mills Memorial Pre servation Services Fund for North and South Carolina.
