Rita's Team Wins Net Title Rim's leant defeated regular-sea son champion Richard Jones Con struction to win the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Coed Volleyball Ixague tournament last week. Rita's Team beat the Jones squad 15-12, 15-12, in the championship match to close the season w ith a 12 7 record. Richard Jones Construction, which won the regular season with a 13-2 mark, ended the year at 15-4. Rita's Team beat Kari's Team, Gene's Body Shop and Richard Jones Construction twice to win the tournament, which concluded last Tuesday. The result was an 1 8-6 loss to the 4-A Buccaneers. David McCallum had three hits and four RBI to lead the Laney attack. South Brunswick's home opener w ith Laney was rained out Monday and was rescheduled for Tuesday af ternoon. Results weren't available at press time. The Cougars open Waccamaw 2 A Conference play Thursday at East Bladen and will host Hoke County in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. The Coastal Carolina Wrestling Alliance match starts at 7:30 p.m. New Hanover Sweeps Scorps New Hanover swept a double header from North Brunswiek Mon day, dropping the Scorpions to 0-4 for the season. The 4-A Wildcats belted 14 hits in the opener en route to a 21-1 thrashing of North Brunswick. Mike Malcy pitched a complete game two-hitter for New Hanover, which scored in every inning. In the sccond game. New Han over's Ed Lewis hit three doubles and knocked in four runs to lead the Wildcats to a 9-2 victory. Chris Moore was the winning pitcher. North Brunswick, which was held to just five hits in the two games, opens Waccamaw 2-A Conference play Friday at home against West Columbus. The Scorps host South Brunswick next Tuesday. Hoggard The Scorpions lost an 11-7 deci sion at Hoggard last Tuesday, com mitting six errors in the game. Nick Studebakcr picked up the win for the Vikings, who had shut out the Scorpions 7-0 the day before in Lcland. North Brunswick look a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but gave up two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Hoggard rallied for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead and held on for the win. Adrain Black had three of North Brunswick's eight hits, including a three-run double in the sixth inning. Bryan Housand came off the bench to pick up two hits for the Scorps. Banquet To Honor Trojan Grid Team A banquet honoring the 1991 West Brunswick football team will be held Saturday, March 28, at 7 p.m. at the Joncs/Byrd Clubhouse at Sea Trail Plantation at Sunset Beach. The Trojans, under the direction of Head Coach Marshall Seay, went 13-2 and won the N.C. 2- A Eastern Championship. Dinner will cost S10 per person. The evening will feature a guest speaker and presentation of team awards, individual awards and championship rings. The banquet is being sponsored by the West Brunswick Athletic Booster Club. Trojan Softball Team Takes Two Openers From Pender West Brunswick's soflball team has won its first two games of the season, posting a pair of non-confcr ence victories over PenHer !he past week. The Lady Trojans beat Pender 1 1 4 on Monday. In its season-opener last Wednesday, West Brunswick topped the visiting Lady Patriots 12 8. Jenny Juilah was the winning pitcher in both games, while Emily Gore and Meg Small led the offen sive attack. "We're very pleased with the of fense," Coach Traccy James said following Monday's win. "We're hitting the ball and scoring runs. We still have some improvement to do on defense." The Lady Trojans committed six errors in the two games, which re sulted in nine unearned runs. Juduh has given up only three earned runs in two games. On Monday, West Brunswick belted out 22 hits in the 11-4 rout at Pender. The Lady Trojans plated five runs in the sixth inning to pull away. Hope Varnam went four-for-four at the plate to lead the West Bruns wick offense. Meg Small, Emily Gore, Chrissy Aikman and Chasity Hinesly each had three hits. West Brunswick had to come back to win its season-opener last Wednesday over visiting Fender, 12-8. "Overall wc played extremely well 'jl ftrsl piinic," Couch Jurncs said. "Wc had some defensive jitters early on but came back and settled down." Pender, which had 12 hits in the game, scored seven unearned runs in the first two innings to lake a 7-2 lead. The Lady Trojans scored two runs in the third inning and live more in the fourth to take the lead for good West Brunswick scored three more runs in the sixth to add to its lead. Besides picking up the win on the mound, Judah went three-for-thrce w ith a double and triple and scored a run. Emily Gore also collected three hits, including two triples, and scor ed three runs for the Lady Trojans. Meg Small and Lena Jancda each went two- for- four and scored two runs for West Brunsw ick, which had 19 hits in the game. West Brunswick's game against New Hanover was rained out last Thursday. West will play at New Hanover today (Thursday) in the fi nal non-conference game of the sea son. The Lady Trojans open the Wac camaw 2-A Conference season Friday at home against Whiteville.
