Wolfpack Nips West Netters
Whitcville posted a 6-3 win over
visiting West Brunswick in the
boys' tennis season opener Monday.
The defending Waccamaw 2-A
Conference champs won five of six
singles' matches and one of the
three doubles' matches.
Bcnji Mankin led West Bruns
wick with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, singles
win over Eric Amngton.
Mankin also teamed up with La
mar Hardy to beat the Whiteville's
Matt Young and Dave Eichman K-6
in doubles play.
Michael Sellers and Kelly Wool
en picked up West's only other win.
They defeated the Wolfpack doubles
team of Chuck Hudson and Kevin
Ransom 8-4.
"Probably one of the biggest de
ciding factors was inexperience,"
West Brunswick Coach Marti Gillis
said.
"I'm playing only two, Lamar and
Michael, who had experience in the
lop six last year," she said. "So to
open with the defending champions
and hold our own was a big step."
West Brunswick was to continue
league play Wednesday at Fairmont
before hosting South Robeson in the
Trojans' home opener next Monday.

Local Waters
Open To
Shellfishermen
Most Brunswick County waters
were opened to shellfishing Satur
day after being closed since Marc h
7.
The one exception is Lockwood
Folly River, which remains closed to
shellfishermen upstream of Gcnocs
Point.
The waters were opened follow
ing sampling for bacteria, according
to a proclamation from the N.C.
Division of Marine Fisheries.
All coastal waters in the county
had been temporarily closed to
shellfishing following a heavy rain

Inshore Black Bass
Fishing Was Good
BY JAMIK MILLIKEN
Unstable weather played havoc on offshore fishing last week. In a period
of 12 iiuui^ I was nght in the middle of two severe ihun
dcrstomis and one major snowstorm. Wow! Try to CAPTAIN
make some sense out of that. The temperature remained JAMIE'S
in the low 60s and I believe that will slow the fast OFFSHORE
warming trend that we were experiencing with the ticuiwr
ocean water. We really need a week of 70- 80-dcgrcc rl5HING
weather to get hack on track. REPORT
? ? ? ?
Tom Tucker did report that die inshore black bass fishing was good. Me
made a trip (between weather systems) out to the three-mile artificial reef
and boa led a cooler lull of black bass.
? ? ? ?
The fishing north of us hits ically cranked up in the past several weeks.
Big wahoos in particular. One report of a 100- pounder and many in the 40
to 50-pound class. These, fish, along with some nice ycllowfin tuna, were
caught in 600 feet of water off the North Carolina Outer Banks. 1 have had
the opportunity to see a 90-pound wahoo before, and let me tell you friends,
it is an awesome sight. He looked just like a MX missile. I guarantee that he
would be something on the end of your string!
? ? ? ?
The long range forecast calls for light winds and seas for the weekend ol
the 28th. I never put much laith in long range forecasts, but it does give us
something to hope for. And if it comes to pass, you can look for me to be
about 60 mdes southeast of the Shallotte sea buoy.
Until next time, good fishin' and good luck "Jolly Mon" wherever you
arc!
