PEOPLE IN THF NFWS Brunswick Students Attain Honors Eight students from Brunswick County arc among those to attain acadcmic honots for the winter quarter at Southeastern Community College at Whitevillc. Earning high honors with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.6 or better arc Sandra Ferguson Duran. music; and Vickie Lynn Pooic, parks and outdoor recrcation, from Shallottc; and Mclanic Bellamy Long, general curriculum, and Rhonda Rcnee Sim mons, criminal justice, from Ash. Making the honors list with a GPA of 3.25 to 3.59 arc these stu dents: Michael Darren McKeithan, general curriculum; Shallottc; Cra ven Allen Hcwctt. prc-pharmacy. Supply; Bradley Wallace Anderson, general curriculum, Leland; and Dcbra Long Fowler, pre-nursing. Ash. Blue Graduates Airman Latanya M. Blue recently graduated from Air Force basic training at Lack land Air Force Base, Texas. A 1991 gradu ate of North Brunswick High School, she is the daughter of Eric G. Blue of Route 2, Lciand, and Marion M. Blue of Route 8, Jacksonville. During six weeks of training she studied the Air Force mission, orga nization and customs and received special training in human relations. Named To Committee Three members representing local industry have been named to the committee charged with laying the groundwork for a science, math and technology education project in Brunswick County. They arc Bobby R. Davis of Brunswick Electric Membership Corp., Shallottc; Carl Frank Black mon of Carolina Power & Light Co., Southport, and Dr. Roger G. Ru dolph of DuPont's Cape Fear plant, Leland. Other committee members arc Johnnie Simpson and Nancy Davis, Brunswick Community College, and Elizabeth Young and Carol Midgett, Brunswick County Schools. The committee met March 17 to begin its work. Members arc charged with outlining the shape and direction the center is to take, in cluding recommendations regarding organization, structure and staffing. Watson Graduates Anthony (Tony) Dwayne Watson of Shallottc gra duated March 20 from the Art Institute of At lanta with an as sociate degree in art in visual communications. A 1989 gradu ate of West Brunswick High watson School, he is the son of Jimmy and Pat Watson of Shallot te. Complete Course Thirteen local fishing boat crew members completed the Red Cross CPR/First Aid coursc Sunday at Coastline Volunteer Rcscuc Squad Certified were charter boat cap tains Gary Carr, Ronnie Kabon, Ed Partost, Otho Tew and Tom Wolfe. Crew members who completed die course were Roger Grainger, Mike Hendricks. George Wilson, Dick Elms, Eunice Grainger, Don nic Simmons, Roger Armbruslcr and Margie Armbrustcr. The U.S. Coast Guard docs not require crew members of charter fishing boats to be certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscita tion. However, the Holden Beach fish ing licet requires training for at least one member of each crew. Helen Potter and Kathleen Jacobs of Holden Bcach taught the coursc. Walker On List Kristin Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Walker of Yaupon Bcach, was recently named to the sccond quarter honor roll at Cape Fear Academy, Wilmington. Her name was inadvertendy omit ted from an earlier list released by the school. Completes Course Marine Pvt. Jeffrey R. Rice re cently completed a moior vc'uicSc operator coursc at Marine Corps Service Support Schools, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejcune. He learned the operation and ca pabilities of Marine Corps vchicScs, defeasive driving techniques, "rules of the road" and user-level preven tive maintenance. The st>n of Richard R. Celebration Focuses On Coast What do you get when you mix education, entertainment and tanta lizing seafood with a theme of envi ronmental protection? Organizers of the Save Our Sounds Coastal Celebration hope it adds up to another weekend of learning and fun. The fourth annual celebration will j be held Saturday and Sunday, April 1 1 and 12, at the Kerr Scott Building on the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. This year's theme is "Preserving the Environment.. .For the Children." During the celebration, children will j be able to participate in essay and poster contests as well as a treasure hunt. Degradation of coastal resources caused by pollution and overdevel opment led to the first Coastal Celebration in ll>89. An estimated 40, (KX) people have attended the three previous events. This year, candidates running for governor will discuss their views on environmental issues in a debate Sunday, April 12, at 1 ! a.m. A wide array of performers, dem onstrators, panel discussions, slide shows and other programs will en tertain and educate adults and young people about environmental issues throughout the weekend. Vlany of the exhibits and activi ties at the celebration arc oriented toward helping people better under stand coastal ecology and how they can help protect it. Admission is S2 per day for adults, while youngsters will be admitted free. Children also will receive free tree seedlings to plant at home.
