It's A Good State For Garden Hoppina
North Carolinians arc very fortu
nate. The state is blessed with well
over 40 public gardens and during
the spring many of these gardens are
at their peak.
For gardeners, botanical gardens
offer a living reference library of
plant materials and new gardening
ideas. I tend to become fixated on
ccrtain ornamental plant types and
ways of doing things. A visit to a
botanical garden helps to renew and
invigorate my gardening spirits. The
diversity of plant material is always
humbling. However, 1 always leave a
beautiful garden brimming full of
new ideas to try in my own backyard.
If you are looking for new plant
materials, try a visit to the North
Carolina State University Arbor
etum, where admission is free. J.C.
Raulston, Ph.D., has done an excel
lent job of collecting an enormous
variety of plant materials.
This spring you can sec dozens of
different varieties of hybrid flower
ing magnolia, redbud, dogwood,
azalea and one of the most beautiful
perennial gardens in the state,
raulston has assembled thousands of
plant species on the Arboretum
grounds, which arc located at the
southeast corner of the intersection
of Hillsborough Street and Route 1
in Raleigh.
For more information, contact the
NCSU Arboretum, NCSU, Box
7609, Raleigh, N.C. 27695-7609.
A little closer to home, ydu may
find a day trip to the New Hanover
Arboretum in Wilmington to be re
freshing.
Ernie Williams, the garden direc
tor, is doing an outstanding job of
acquiring plants and adding new
features to the gardens. He is in the
process of building a Japanese gar
den feature and townhouse gardens.
To correspond with the N.C.
Azalea Festival, all sorts of events
are planned this month. Admission
to the arboretum is free and lours for
groups can be arranged. For more
information, call Williams at 919
