Wc hit the ball as hard as 1 vc ever seen a high school team hit it," West Brunswick Coach Traccy James said. "Wc hit the hide off of it." The win, coupled with a 6-2 vic tory over Fairmont last Tuesday, kept the Lady Trojans undefeated through the first three weeks of the season. West Brunswick entered this week's play with an overall record of 5-0 and a 3-0 mark in the Waccamaw 2-A Conference. "We just banged the ball hard to day," James said following last Friday's win. "We would have beat en a lot of teams today." West Brunswick wasted no time against the Lady Mustangs, scoring 10 runs in the top of the first inning and 1 1 more runs in the second. The Lady Trojans scored at least three runs in each of the five innings played, and all of the starters had at least two hits each. Catherine Bell led the attack with a four-for-four performance at the plate. She belted three home runs and baited in nine runs in the game. Meg Small went fivc-for-fivc for the Lady Trojans, who have aver aged 14 runs per game so far this season Pitcher Jenny Judah picked up her fifth win of the season, and Ellen Wcmyss pitched the final two in nings. James said South Robeson had 19 hits, but committed almost as many errors in the field. BPUNSWICK BEACON North Girls Pound Opponents North Brunswick's Lady Scor pions made 52 hits and tallied 56 runs in a pair of Waccaniaw 2-A Conference sofiball victories last week. East Bladen was the victim on Friday, yielding 31 hits and five home runs in an unbelievable 40-7 loss to North Brunswick. Kristie Mint/ and Angie Goddard each nailed two homers and knocked in six runs for the Lady Scorpions. Tanya Edge had the oth er home run and picked up five RBI in the game. The Lady Scorpions defeated county rival South Brunswick last Tuesday in Boiling Spring Lakes, collecting 21 hits en route to a 16-10 victory. Michelle Bennett, Edge and God dard each drove in three runs for North Brunswick, which entered this week 2-1 in the conference and 7-2 overall. The Lady Scorpions lost their conference opener 18-12 to defend ing league champion West Colum bus on March 27. North Brunswick was to play at Whitcville on Tuesday and host West Brunswick on Friday. South Loses Softball Games South Brunswick lost a pair of Waccamaw 2-A Confcrcncc soflball games last week, tailing to North Brunswick and defending league champion West Columbus. The Lady Cougars dropped to 1 -2 in the confcrcncc and 2-3 overall w ith a 17-6 loss at West Columbus last Friday. South lost to North Brunswick's Lady Scorpions 16-10 last Tuesday. After taking a 3-0 first-inning lead at West Columbus, the Lady Vikings rallied for 14 unearned runs in the bottom hall of the first to spoil South's hopes of an upset. "We're not playing well at all right now," South Brunswick Coach William Hargrove said. "We're in a transitional period." Hargrove said the success of the girls' basketball team this year kept six or seven players out of spring training for softball. The team is still trying to jell. "When they achieve success in one sport it will normally cause problems in another," Hargrove said. "But that's not the bottom line. The bottom line is we're not hitting, catching and throwing like we should."
