Season Start Means A Boost To Economy BY HOLLY RICHARDS, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT South Brunswick Islands Chamber Of Commerce Spring is coming, we're finally on daylight savings time. I couldn't be happier. When I was a kid, I couldn't wait for daylight savings time. It meant that summer was on its way. School would soon be out, I could go barefooted and we would be going to the beach. Easter's almost here. Easter's the start of the va cation season in the South Brunswick Islands. The start of the vacation season means families influx dol ..... ti. .. . ? . r ? ? . ? jj. . lUlo lliiu vuj wvmiwiii*. i tun, ill} 1IICIK1>, IIIC UK" chamber's hard work is paying oft. I for one am glad old man winter is going to sleep. Even in the dead of winter, we here at the chamber are busy promoting our area (Believe me, 1 was in some cold places this winter). Everywhere we RICHARDS went, we told anyone who would listen how warm and beautiful the South Brunswick Islands are. For me, talking up our islands is easy, it just comes natural. I hate cold weather. My favorite season is summer. 1 love everything that goes along with it, shorts, llip flops, suntans and, of course, the people. In the summer attitudes arc belter. Maybe that's why the people here arc so friendly. Besides, this is one ol the most beautiful places on earth. Why w ould you want to be anyplace else? As most of you know , 1 came here in the middle of July of last year. The chamber was into the crucial, finishing stages of the King Classic and the Oyster Festival. That meant diving into a new job and learning the ropes and it meant 1 was not able to enjoy most of the finer things that the South Brunswick Islands has to offer. All thai has changed. I've learned a lot this year. I guess you could say I've got my feet firmly planted arid sand in my shoes. Also, in this community, I've made some very dear friends. I'm as excited as our tourists aboul spending the summer here. My fnends and family arc lin ing up the weekends to come down I never knew 1 had so many friends unul I moved to the South Brunswick Islands. It's just amazing, people arc coming out of the woodwork (Maybe I shouldn't have talked about our beautiful beaches so much). Speaking of friends, last week we said so long, but not goodbye, to another dear friend Mary Barton. Mary is leaving the chamber in an em ployee capacity, but she'll remain very active as a volunteer. Mary served the chamber tor eight years and we'll miss her. From all of us at the chamber., good luck Mary and thanks for all of your hard work. Megivern left again in November, 1982, but was back on the staff as associate editor in 1987, when she assumed editorial responsibility for Island Living, the newspaper's noli day tabloid. For the next four years she held this position until purchas ing The Coastal Carolinian weekly newspaper in Wilmington, in June of 1991. Agency Offers Seed To Aid Private Woodland Management In recognition of the importance of woodlands to the survival of wildlife, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will provide free planting mixtures to those inter ested in better management of their wood lands. A combination of permanent seed mixture, annual seed mixture, and scricia lespedi/a will be distributed on a first-come basis to suitable landowners, according to a news re lease. These permanent food patches should be planted in openings in woodlands, such as old logging roads, logging decks and other nat urai openings. They supplement na tive foods and increase the carry ing capacity of the area for game. Open fields in which young trees are planted provide both food and cover for many wildlife species. Legumes and grasses benefit small game species. Another agency service benefit ting woodlands is control burning during fall and winter. This reduces damage in case of a wildfire and re leases new growth in the spring. Those interested in a more exten sive wildlife plan for their wood lands may call the North Carolina Forest Service at 253-5297. * l. \ Tom RABON District Four Commissioner Retired Postmaster, Lifelong Resident, served on Social Services Board, Hospital Board and Election Board, member of New Hope Presbyterian Church.
