VISUALIZATION can help sensitize us to our natural surroundings. ttam PHOTO BY BILL FA VIP The Art Of Visualization BY BILL FAVKR The late photographer, Ansel Adams, famed for his landscapes and scenes of the West, wrote about the process of visualization. He saw it as the ability to perceive or "visu alize" what a photograph would look like before the picture was S taken. The process develops the dis ciplines of planning, of observing, and of becoming aware of what is around you. It slows the photogra pher down-makes him take his time. Ansel Adams was not the only one to write about the idea. Most of Rachel Carson's writing was about the "sense of wonder"-thc gift to "see," to be fully aware of surroundings. Both of these writers remind us of the importance of awareness-of sensitizing ourselves to respond to our environment by careful observation and apprecia tion. Once we develop the ability, we may use it to photograph wildlife and scenery, to study nature, or simply to enjoy more fully what is around us! What better time to begin sensitizing ourselves than on a beautiful spring day. We have blossoms and color all around us in our yards and along the road sides. Rich green pines and budding hardwoods are ac cented with Carolina yellow jessamin and wisteria. Redbuds, pears, dogwoods and other (lowering trees add more color and wild azaleas bloom low in the woods to stand out among the shrubs. Singing birds seem to welcome the rebirth of spring and they help sensitize us to the sounds around us. Mockingbirds, towhees, catbirds, robins, cardinals, and hosts of warblers give us song. Spring frogs "sing" at night and let us know they arc out there sharing this space on our planet with us. Visualization can mean much more than viewing a possible picture. Through the process we can be come more in tunc with our natural environment and more aware of our own senses and needs. Have fun trying to visualize and enjoy being on the beach or in the woods or in your own spring yard this time of year.
