County Told It Needs To Recycle Plastic
BY TKRRY POPE
Long Bcach resident Helen Hollar
believes Brunswick County must
find a market for
plastics to make
its recycling pro
gram more ef
fective.
She also pre
sented a petition
to Brunswick
County Com
missioners Mon
day asking for a
recycling station
The closest center to Long Beach
is at the Southport transfer station on
N.C. 133 seven miles away.
Newspapers, three colors of glass
and aluminum arc accepted at trans
fer stations in Southport, Leland and
Hale Swamp Road in Shallotte,
staffed sites operated under contract
with Waste Industries Inc. Other
sites are under construction, with a
total of 10 planned for the county.
Volunteers had operated a station
at Long Bcach from the summer of
19X9 to March 2, 1992, when the
contract with Waste Industries be
gan. The county had been paying up
to S200 per month to George Bush
Rccyclers of Florence, S.C., to haul
away trailers filled with recyclable
goods.
However, the town has opted to
close the site rather than to pick up
the tab. Under state law, counties
must stop the amount of garbage en
tering landfills 25 percent by Jan. 1
or face stiff fines.
"It is a shared responsibility," said
Kelly Holdcn, board chairman. "The
towns are responsible, too."
District 3 Commissioner Gene
Pir.kcrton, who lives at Long Bcach,
said he would ask that the county to
build 50 recycling stations if the
money was available and if the sites
could be maintained.
"I'm really surprised that- Long
Bcach took the attitude of closing
down," said Pinkerlon. "People on
Oak Island, who arc truly behind re
cycling, should go to Long Bcach
and say, 'Why did wc shut down at
the expense of $200 a month?*"
Ms. Hollar said Oak Island's pop
ulation will swell to more dian
30,000 this summer, placing a bur

den on the county's landfill and the
environment.
"I want this place cleaned up for
my grandchildren," she said.
If Waste Industries cannot find a
market for plastics, the county will
be looking for another vendor who
can, said Recycling Coordinator
Mary McCarlcy.
Plastics arc worth about one cent
per pound.
Resources Development Director
Thomas Monks has been approach
ed by industries that make use of re
cyclable gcxxls that have considered
locating here, said County Engineer
Robert Tucker.
In a related matter, commission
ers acccptcd a low bid of SI 14,650
from EGS Weighing Consultants to
install computerized scales at the
three transfer stations. The county
had budgeted SKK).(XH) for the
equipment.
The difference will be taken from
funds set aside to build a garbage
convenience station on N.C. 211.
Thai project will not get underway
until the 1942-93 fiscal year.
District 5 Commissioner Donald
Shaw asked that Tucker compare
1991 with 1992 dumping tonnage at
the landfill to sec if there is an in
crease and to report back to the
board.
"I feel like Bninswick County is
being dumped on," said Shaw.
"We're suppose to be recycling. It's
supposed to be less."
Scales may be used for lipping
fees during the next fiscal year.
Tipping fees arc charges for dump
ing garbage based on volume.
