ENTERTAINMENT RRIFFS Freelon Album Cominq Chinycrc Nncnna Frcclon, a for mer Brunswick Community Col lege visiting art ist , a will re lease her debut ^ V a'kum- Black V Butterfly, this '?WL spring, after signing a multi album contract with Columbia FREELON Records last fall. The album will feature jazz stan dards such as Stella By Starlight and Skylark , as well as three Frcclon originals. On it Ms. Frcclon is accompanied by a 22- to 29-piccc string orchestra and various rhythm section combinations. Ms. Frcclon is presently a jazz ed ucator and Artist-in-Rcsidcncc in Durham, where she resides with her husband and three children. Columbia's jazz roster includes such artists as Wynton and Branford Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr. Ms. Frcclon was featured recently in an artical in the Southern Arts Federation's JazzSouth news publi cation. It's Strawberry Time The 60th North Carolina Straw berry Festival in Chadbourn will be held April 24 through May 2, drawing visitors from many slates to this oldest Tar Heel agricultural festival. Miss North Carolina has been named marshal for the April 25 pa rade. A week of other activities in cludes a run-a-thon and race walk, en tertainment in the park, games, fire works, and on May 1, Strawberry Encounters, an outdoor buffet dinner with entertainment by the group Driftwood. New this year is a residential straw berry display contest, as well as the annual business display competition. Judging will be held on April 24. Artist Exhibits The works of Shallottc artist Ann imagination arc reflected in a se ries of masks and paintings CHADWICK that have a "reach out and grab you" feeling. Chadwick has a bachelor of arts de gree in art from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Chadwick arc displayed in the lobby of Bruns wick Commun ity College dur ing April. Her sense of abstract vision and fertile Women's Handgun Course Set A handgun coursc for women will be offered Saturday, April 25. by the Brunswick County Sheriffs Depart ment and the Brunswick County Law Enforcement Association. Coordinator Don Gates said in struction will cover safety, the law concerning self-defense and a shoot ing coursc. Targets and coaches will be provided; students must provide their own handguns and ammuni lion. Registration is limited to 30 women. To sign up, contact the Brunswick County Sheriffs Depart ment at 253-4321 or 1-800-672 6379, and leave name and address for Don Gates. The North Carolina Symphony will give its sccond concert of the season in Brunswick County at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at West Brunswick High School in Shallottc. Guest artist Colin Carr, cellist, will be featured, and guest conduc tor Raymond Harvey, will wield the baton. The concert will include Concerto No I in A Minor for Cello and Or chestra by Camillc Saint-Sacn, Scheherazaile by Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov, Kol Nidrei and Adagio on Hebrew melodies for Cello and Orchestra by Max Brush, and Overture of the Season by Thomas Svoboda. Harvey is currently music director for the Springfield, Mass., Sym phony. Carr has had a long affilia tion with Yehudi Menuhin and is now on the faculty of the New Eng land Conservatory in Boston. Tickets for the concert, S10 for adults and SX for senior ciu/ens anil students, arc available at the South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce in Shallottc and the Blue Dolphin Gallery on Long Beach Road in Soulhport.
