District 1
Frink will face one of two Re
publican contenders in November.
Joseph V. Brust and Janet Pope arc
vying for the District 1 seaL In
cumbent Doug Baxley, a Democrat,
chose not to file for re-election.
Pope, who describes herself as a
parent activist/student advocate,
names three priority issues: account
ability of teachers, administrators
and school board members; compe
tence of educators; and attention to
basics.
"How did America become the
best educated nation in the world
with coal oil lamps, pot-bellied
stoves and one-room school hous
es?" she queried. "Simple: a nation
wide commitment to moral and edu
cational excellence!"
Her opponent Brust, a former su
perintendent of schools, stresses the
issue of teaching and learning as a
principal focus and suggests a policy
of shared governance as a frame
work for decision making.
"By encouraging new ideas from
staff and parents," Brust said, "ihey
will take increased responsibility for
school success."

Fairley in the November election.
Sligh, a retired school administra
tor, sees strong educational leader
ship, classroom building needs and a
strengthened curriculum as leading
issues. "Higher expectations lead to
higher achievement," he said.
"Strengthen the gifted and talented
program; also, the Comprehensive
High School is a positive way to be
gin."
Tewey, an educational consultant
and former assistant superintendent,
stresses communication needs a
mong educators, parents, students
and community, as well as the im
provement of the school environ
ment and more lime afforded teach
ers to perform at a high level.
"Schools should be safe, inviting
places." she said, "with opportuni
ties for students to get mentoring,
tutoring and counseling assistance."
Former Brunswick County Man
ager Carter also lists a good teaching
and learning environment as a top
issue, along with accountability and
planning and policies. He pointed
out, "The school board, as well as
parents, principals and administra
tors, must be support units, not the
primary units."
