Town Gives Squad $15,000 Holden Beach Commissioners voted last week to give 515,000 to Coastline Volunteer Rescue Squad to help pay for a new ambulance and equipment. The donation increased the squad's capita) fund to 572,500, leaving it between 57,500 and S 12,500 short of the projected cost of the new unit and supplies. Coa&line VRS Chief Kathleen Jacobs said the ambulancc will cost S67.000 and a defibrillator will cost $10,000. The rcscuc squad also needs other equipment and is changing over its radio system, she said. To make up the difference, Mrs. Jacobs said she will ask the county for more money, seek donations and borrow whatever else it needs from the bank. Coastline has already received S20.000 from the county, S2,0(X) from the Holden Beach Property Owners Association, 52,500 from Vamanitown and raised 53.500 during its Easter weekend fund-raiser. "We're going to stand in the middle of the road again if we have to," Mrs. Jacobs said, referring to a "bucket shake" last Saturday. The squad needs to raise the rest of the money before the new ambu lance arrives in early to mid-June. Holden Beach's donation wasn't included in the budget. Town Manager Gary Parker said the town has received more money than it ex pected and speni less than expected this fiscal year. In a related matter, town officials still haven't decided whether its water rcscuc team should incorporate as an independent agency like the rcscuc squad or fire department. Commissioners discussed the proposal last week with Coastline offi cials anu Keiiii Sawyer, a cajnaiu with Tri-Bcacn Volunteer Fire De partment who helped form the water rescue program. Sawyer said the major advantage of being incorporated is that it would allow members of the water rescue team to get state insurance and benefits. The town board plans to discuss the proposal at a future meeting when Brunswick County Emergency Management Coordinator Cecil Logan and Tri- Beach Fire Chief Doug Todd can attend. Turtle Patrol Will Use ATV Aqair Holdcn Beach Commissioners voted last week to let volunteers with the turtle watch program use an all-terrain vchicic (ATV) on the strand and agreed to seek turtle sanctuary status for the town. The ATV can be used to search for sea turtle nests as long as drivers fol low operation guidelines set last year and sign waivers holding the town harmless in the event of an accident. The board had voted earlier this year to allow use of the ATV as long as the county signed an agreement holding the town harmless. The county parks and recreation depart ment coordinates the turtle watch program. Town Manager Gary Parker said at last Thursday's board meeting that the county can't sign an agree ment because the vchicic used at Holders Beach is privately owned. The owner can't get insurance be cause it isn't licensed. Volunteers with the turtle patrol will use the ATV early each morn ing to ride the length of the strand and look for signs of sea turtle nests. Volunteers log the location of each nest and then help the just-hatched baby turtles get to the ocean. Commissioner Sid Swarts, who is one of the ATV drivers, said it would be difficult to have the pro gram without the four-wheel vehicle. "Without it your turtle program is probably dead because there's no way you can cover the beach," he said. Parker said the ATV is safe be cause it is easy to see and hear. Swarts said use of the vehicle is needed right away because turtles will start laying their nests any day. Besides waivers from drivers, commissioners voted to request a letter from the town's insurance car rier saying the town will be covered for any liability. Parker said he has received verbal approval from the insurance compa ny, but the town board wants it in writing. Former town rnansgcr Diane Clark said the company gave the town a letter last year. Responding to a request from the county's turtle program coordinator, commissioners voted last week to ask State Rep. David Rcdwine to in troduce a bill designating the island as a turtle sanctuary. The town is building a ditch to help drain the low-lying area and plans to have one of its employees licensed to spray for mosquitoes. But some residents say that's not enough. "We feel like we're lower than a tadpole down on Brunswick," Don Pollard said at last week's town meeting. Residents say the mosquitoes have been a problem for four years and the town hasn't done anything to correct it. "This thing's been talked about long enough and I think we ought to do something about it," said Crawford Hart, another resident of the street. Town Manager Gary Parker said liic iowu is uuing something, li stall ed digging a ditch to drain the small ponds that form whenever it rains. Parker is waiting for state ap proval to run a drain line into the marsh and plans to have a town worker certified so he can spray for mosquitoes when the county is short-handed. "There arc steps being taken to solve the problem and we hope to solve it." Parker told the group at hist Thursday's meeting. Several residents suggested the town take bulldozers on the property and knock down the earthen bcrms thai seem to add to the problem. They said spreading dirt on the land would help reduce ponding. Town officials said they might try that if the drain line doesn't work. Leon Buffkin said he even can't go outside without being attacked by mosquitoes. "I know you have them in the summer but not like this. You can't even go out. They eat you up." Mayor Wally Ausley said the town is trying to correct the situa tion. "We realize this is an immediate problem," he said. "Not only is this the season people come to our bcach, it's the season mosquitoes breed too." Commissioner Jim Foumier said the old spoil area behind Brunswick Avenue isn't the only one on the is land and the town should look at all of them and see if they arc serving as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. "I don't think the Corps of STAFF PHOTO BY DOUG RUTTOR PONDS like this one provide an ideal spot for mosquitoes to breed. The bugs bother residents on Brunswick Avenue, seen in the background. Engineers or the owner is going to let you go in there with a bulldozer and knock down those berms," he said. "I think it's a larger problem than we realize right now." The mosquito problem was one of many issues that went before the board of commissioners last week during a lengthy meeting than ended after midnight and lasted more than five hours.
