TIED FOR CONFERENCE LEAD West Tennis Team Rocks Wolfpack W>, vtv. ? ??? ? BY DOUG R UTTER The West Brunswick boys' tennis team rocked the Waccamaw 2- A Conference boat last Tuesday with a 5-4 upset of previously-undefeated Whitcvillc. The win, coupled with an easy 7 2 victory over visiting East Bladen on Monday, brought the Trojans in to a lie for the league lead with the Wolfpack. Whitcvillc had beaten West Brunswick 6-3 in the conference opener on March 23. But the Tro jans got revenge in last week's match in Shallouc. "Since the opening season loss to Whitcvillc, this team has believed they could beat them and worked hard to achieve this," West Bruns wick Coach Marti Gillis said. "It was definitely a team effort " Both teams arc 9-1 in league play with one match remaining. The Trojans, who handed Whitcvillc its first conference ioss in two years, were to play at South Brunswick on Wednesday for the county champi onship. West Brunswick and Whitcvillc were tied at 3-3 after the singles matches. The Trojan doubles teams of Jeff Ballou and Jason Carr, and Lamarr Hardy and Benji Mankin won their matches to lift West to its biggest win of the year. On Monday, the Trojans won four of six singles matches and swept the doubles competition to post a 7-2 win over visiting East Bladen. "This match worried me because they played us closc at their place. 5-4," Coach Gillis said. "The guys really came through." East Bladen's David Valcntincr, the defending regional champion, stayed undefeated on the season with a straight-set win over West's Hardy. In non-conference play. West Brunswick was a 9-0 loser to St. Pauls last Wednesday. "This was probably a good loss," Gillis said. "St. Pauls is easily the best team we've played, probably one of the best in the region." "We were flat from our win the day before (Whitevillc) and if there were any doubts we didn't need to keep working, we were returned to earth." West's Manktn suffered his first singles loss of the season against St. Pauls after being moved up from the number four slot to number two to fill in for an injured teammate. West Brunswick opens the first round of the dual team state playoffs next Tuesday. Its opponent has not yet been determined. East Bladen Singles: Valcntincr (EB) def.
