SPORTING SCFNF League Bragging Rights On The Line For Trojans As the high school spring sports season comcs to a closc. West Brunswick and Whiteville arc balding for Waccamaw 2-A Conference brag ging rights. The arch rivals arc fighting for the each year to the high school in each conference that achieves the best overall performance during the year. More important than the trophy is school pride. West Brunswick and Whiteville, situated at opposite ends of Highway 130, were tied for first in the Wachovia Trophy standings after the fall season with 21.5 points each. Whiteville took a slim lead after a winter season in which the Lady Wolfpack and Lady Trojan basketball teams were among the three squads that tied for the conference title. The Wolfpack entered the spring season with 55 points, compared to 52.5 for West Brunswick. The rest of the schools in the conference arc basi cally out of the picture. The way things stand now, the Trojans and the Wolfpack arc like two thoroughbred racehorses going after the same prize. They've lapped the rest of the field and it's come down to the last few contests. If the Wachovia Trophy competition was a horse race, the call might go something like this: Down the stretch. ..they're ncck-and-ncck... heading for the wire. ..West Brunswick. ..Whiteville. ..West Brunswick. ..Whiteville.. .too closc to call. ..it's a photo finish. At this writing, it appears that West Brunswick and Whiteville will tic for the league tennis title. Whiteville has the edge in track and field, but West Brunswick finished ahead of the Wolfpack in golf. It'll come down to baseball and Softball. Each team has four games re maining including the ball games slated Tuesday. Whiteville leads the con ference baseball standings, but West Brunswick is leading in softball. Like 1 said, it's just too closc to call. In any event, the next two weeks should offer an exciting end to a good spring sports season and exciting year overall for West Brunswick athletics. South Brunswick, which won a share of the girls' basketball title and finished second in boys' basketball, moved up two notches in the Wachovia Trophy standings following the winter season. The Cougars, who were tied with East Bladen for fifth place after the fall season, collected 27 points over the winter and jumped to third in the stand ings with 40 points. Fairmont was closc behind in fourth place with 38 points, followed by West Columbus with 35, East Bladen with 34, South Robeson with 19.5 and North Brunswick with 10. Knocked Down A Peg North Brunswick's Maduka Ballard, who set a state record this season with a 7-foot-2-inch high jump, has been knocked down a peg on the nation al scene. The Scorpion senior no longer owns the country's best high school high jump of the year, but is hanging right in there in second place. Mike Lcdct of Morgan City, La., recently cleared 7 feet, 3 inches, to lake over the top spot, according to last week's listing in USA Today. Ballard is tied for sccond with Pernall Bamett of Bastrop, Texas. That's still not bad for a skinny kid from Lcland who only took up high jumping two years ago. Way to go, Maduka. West Brunswick Softball Team Takes Two West Brunswick's Softball team snapped out of its mid-season funk last week with a pair of impressive wins in Waccamaw 2-A Conference play. The Lady Trojans posted an 18-7 win over South Robeson last Wednesday in Shallotte in a contest that had been moved up from Thursday. West Brunswick had snapped a two-game losing streak the day before in Fairmont, crushing the Golden Tornadoes by a score of 18-1. Both games were callcd after five innings of play be cause the Lady Trojans were leading by at least 10 runs in each ease. West's Jenny Judah was the winning pitcher in both games. She also picked up two hits against South Robeson, including a grand-slam home run. Other leading hitters for West against the Lady Mustangs included Meg Small with four hits and catcher Emily Gore with two hits. Catherine Bell also had two hits including a two-run homer. After starting the year at 8-0, West Brunswick lost its first game of the year to South Brunswick just before Easter break. The Lady Trojans returned to the diamond last week with a 10-5 loss to conference rival Whitcvillc. West Brunswick entered this week's play at 8-2 in the Waccamaw Conference and 10-2 overall. Cougars Fall Short In Marathon Game South Brunswick's baseball team probably slept extra late Saturday after competing in a marathon game last Friday at West Columbus. The Waccamaw 2-A Conference ball game went 16 innings before the host Vikings pulled out a 6-5 win. South Brunswick Coach Jack Brown said the game lasted nearly six hours. Parents look the players out for breakfast at a local waffle house after the game ended at 12:40 a.m. Saturday morning. *'As a coach, that was the longest game I've been involved in," Brown said. "I once played in an 18-inning game." Brown had nothing bul praise for his young team's performance. Brett Tabor pitched nine innings of score less relief for the Cougars. South Brunswick was coming off a 9-6 upset win over North Brunswick last Tuesday in Boiling Spring Lakes. Danny Sellers had three hits to lead South. Mike Brogan had two hits and scored two runs for the Cougars, and Mike Clewis hit an RBI double and also scored twice. Jason Bracey, Lewis Vaught and Eric McMahan also had two hits apiecc for the Cougars, who ended a six-game losing streak to the Scorpions. South Brunswick collected 12 hits in the game and never trailed, taking advantage of five North Brunswick errors. Rodney Willoughby hurled the win for South Brunswick, getting re lief from Tabor in the fifth. South Brunswick entered this week's play sporting a 2-8 confer ence record and an overall mark 4 14. The Cougars hosted South Robeson Tuesday night and will play at Fairmont on Friday.
