SPORTING SCENE West Brunswick Losing Hard-Core Football Man West Brunswick's losing a hard-corc football man. Head Football Coach Marshall Seay's decision to leave Shallottc for the hills of Polk County is big news on Undoubtedly, some people are gla dened by the loss of what they con sider to be an outstanding football coach. Marshall Seay has been very suc cessful at West Brunswick. By their very nature, succcssful people will al ways step on some toes. Seay has probably broken a few during his six years in Shallottc. In my opinion. West Brunswick was somewhat fortunate to get Coach Seay to start with. He came to a schoc and facilities that needed improvement. He's been a part of turning both of those around. In the 14 years before Marshall Seay, West Brunswick had just six winning seasons in football and only two conference titles. Seay, who bccamc the winningest football coach in school history with a 48-20 record, inherited a program that went 2-8 the year before his ar rival. He turned it around in a few short years. The Trojans went 5-5 his first year at the helm and haven't had a losing season since. They won the conference in 1988 and made it to the state championship game last season. West Brunswick won a whopping 13 games last year, an impressive total when you consider the Trojans won a total of 10 games in the four years prior to Seay's arrival. West Brunswick's success on the football field couldn't help but spill over into other areas. It's brought more attention to the band, for instance, and drawn the community closer together. Seay has also helped nine of his players get to college on football scholarships ? something that was almost unheard of before he arrived. Taking over as sports editor last fall, I only had to deal with Marshall Seay for part of one football season. I concede that I'm no expert on the man, but I know he worked awfully hard. When he wasn't on the field with the team. Coach Seay was in his of fice all hours of the night. He definitely earned his keep at West Brunswick. Love him or hate him, nobody can criticizc Coach Seay's work ethic. He ate, drank and slept Trojan football while he was here and produced a winner. Also, it seemed Coach Seay always had the best interest of the kids at heart. He never said anything, to the press anyway, to embarrass a particu lar player. He always liked to dwell on the positive. Personally, I'm sorry to see Coach Seay leave West Brunswick with the Trojans on the brink of a stale title. But at the same time, I understand his decision. He's done everything he can at West Brunswick, and the Polk County job is simply too good to pass up. Although he's saying goodbye to Shalloue, Coach Seay is leaving the high school a lot better off than it was when he arrived in 1986. West Brunswick is in a position to get a top-notch football coach as a replacement. It will be interesting to see how the school handles its golden opportunity. Regardless of what happens at West Brunswick, don't be surprised if you start reading about Polk County football in the newspapers real soon. Coach Seay built a winner on the coast by the sweat of his brow, and he'll probably do the same thing in the mountains. the local sports scene. J to sec him go. I was very honored to have been an associate of Alan Holden. He is, without a doubt , the most ethical, understanding real estate broker in the South Brunswick Islands. My choosing to take a site-selection officer's position with a national franchise company was harder to make after joining the Alan Holden team. I have known Alan Holden most of my life, and in high school he was known as Coach Holden. In the South Brunswick Islands, he should be known as Coach Holden, too. He is a leader and has once again put together a winning team. 1 will continue to do limited work in the South Brunswick Islands and will work closely with the Alan Holden team. I ask my customers and clients to call Alan Holden Realty for their real estate needs. For information on Village Pines Office Park or any of the Simmonses' properties, you may continue to call Village Pines executive suites at 754-5979.
