Brunswick Billboards
Targeted For Remove
T\venty billboards in Brunswick
County are among the 3,200 in
North Carolina that the Bush Ad
ministration wants to tear down.
Of 137 county roadside bill
boards, approximately 14.6 percent
have been declared non-conforming
under provisions of the revived 1965
Federal Highway Bcautification
Act. States are being asked to
remove the 22,000 illegal billboards
by June 18.
However, the requirement may
have little impact in North Carolina.
According to the N.C. Department
of Transportation in a report last
year, there were no illegal billboards
along North Carolina roads.
The timetable set forth by federal
officials gives the state two years to
remove billboards that don't con
form to spacing, zoning and other
requirements of the law. States will
forfeit 10 percent of their federal
highway funds if the billboards arc
not removed.
Scenic North Carolina, a Raleigh
based group working to protect and
enhance the appearance of the state,
hailed the Bush Administration's
action as a "major breakthrough
"We're delighted that the Ti
Administration is aggressively
filling the intent of the Higi .
Beautification Act." said Dale ? '?
Keel, spokesperson for Scenic
Carolina. "Many of the highway
our state are a real mess, and thi .
a step in the right direction."
Last year, the Federal High v.*;
Administration reported that only
non-conforming billboards v,._
removed nationwide, none in N<
Carolina.
The Intermodal Surface Tr.
portalion Efficiency Act (IS"!
signed in December by PrcM..
Bush made millions available f
billboard removal. Bush instuun
states that they will jeopardize tin
federal traasportation dollars if t'u
do not enforce the new hillboc
prohibition along scenic byways :
mandated by ISTEA.
The state has approximate!',
miles of scenic byways.
Seven billboards in Coluuio:
County, 20 in Bladen County l
in New Hanover County were ;?i
declared illegal.
