Weeping Love Grass Suitable For Dry Garden Dear Plant Doctor: Believe it or not. I would like to know where I can purchase (or how to propagate) a type of grass I sec that grows along highways, like the steep slopes on 1-40 where the soil can easily erode. This grass is very bushy, clumpy looking and 1 assume it is native. I would like a bunch of it to provide cover in my "wildlife backyard" but do not want to poach any from the highways. What is this grass and where can 1 purchase it? A ?? 1 U .1! >..<? 'Un rtlMTTVI . 1 tA-liVW U IV ?1 OM WJ which you are referring to is called Weeping love grass (Era^roslris curvula). This native African grass was introduced years ago for vegeta tion of hot, dry infertile sites for ero sion control. Seeded extensively by the N.C. Department of Transpor tation on steep slopes, this perennial bunch-type grass can be propagated by seed or division. Weeping love grass has also found a home on golf courses, parks and in low mainte nance landscapes. Regular mowing will kill Weep THE PLANT DOCTOR C. Old foliage may be removed by mowing in the early spring by using the highest mowing height. 1 have observed that older stands (5-plus years) of Weeping love grass tend to become very clumpy and prone to woody plant invasion. The inflorescencc (seed head) is presently visible on plantings of Weeping love grass throughout most of the coastal Carol inas. Prolific quantities of seed arc produced and natural reseeding is quite common. Fertilization of established stands encourages weedy grass inva i sion and is not usually recommend ed. Do not poach this grass from the highway shoulders. Seeding rates for Weeping love grass usually range from 5 to 25 pounds of seeds per acre. Seed can be ordered or obtained by most large seed suppliers. This is a wonderful ornamental grass for non-irrigated, dry, low maintenance gardens. ? * * * L.T. Lucas, Ph.D., a turf grass plant pathologist at N.C. State University, recently told me that he had been seeing a great deal of prob lems on centipede grass. Even though we experienced a very mild winter, many centipede grass lawns arc showing symptoms of winter in jury, centipede grass decline, over fertilization and other, as of yet, unidentified disease problems. Most of these problems occur because of improper maintenance and fertiliza tion practices. Centipede grass prefers acid soils (pH 5.5), low soil fertility and a mowing height of 1 to 1.5 inchcs. The annual application of a low amount of slow release nitrogen, low phosphorus, high potassium fer tilizer (like 10 pounds 5-5-15 per 1,000 square feet or equivalent), or equivalent in May or June provides all the needed nutrients for adequate centipede grass growth. Heavy thatch accumulation indicates that cxccssivc fertilization practices are being used which will make the CHOLESTEROL SCREENING There will be a cholesterol screening and general health risk profile offered at Wal Mart, Shallotte, NC, on May 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. -6 p.m. There is no fasting required for the total cholesterol and the cost is only $7. Other packages include (1) Choi, HDL (the good cholesterol), and Risk Ratio for only $16. (2) Choi. HDL, LDL, Trigly cerides and Risk Ratio for $22 (fasting or non-fasting). Centipede grass is also suscepti ble to yellowing in the spnng that is often due to iron deficiency or poor root development The application of a soluble form of iron (like chelated iron) will usually correct this problem.
