North Brunswick High Holds
First Academic Awards Banauet
Departing from the customary
gathering in the school gym, with its
noise, warmth and informality, North
Brunswick High School presented its
academic awards this year in the for
mal atmosphere of a banquet.
Held in the Wilmington Hilton
Hotel, it was complete with dressed
up students and a guest speaker.
According to Mike Hooks, a
North teacher who helped plan the
event, it was a rousing success.
"Even though we had to charge
parents S12 each, it was well attend
ed," he said, "and the students were
eager to be there and were very well
behaved."
The May 6 academic awards ban
quet in the Wilmington Hilton ball
room featured a talk by Annette
Holiday Mosley and music by the
North Brunswick Chamber Ensem
ble, directed by band director Brian
Benton.
The highlight of the evening,
however, was the distribution of
awards and scholarships to deserv
ing students.
The International Studies Asso
ciation for Foreign Language award
ed first place to Marion Evans and
second place to Melissa Martin and
Dwain Waddell.
First place winner in the Bruns
wick County Electric Cooperative
essay contest was Wendy Hypes.
Maggie Dees was awarded second
chair in the regional concert band,
while Rhonda Clemmons achieved
sccond chair in the regional sym
phonic band.
A DECA winner in marketing in
the district apparel and accessories
event was Claire Hickman, while
Scott Roberts and Shannon Phillips
won in general merchandising and
Jason Novak look sccond place in
automotive district events.
In the Brunswick County Busi
ness/Data Processing Contest, Tam
atha Rich won second place in key
boarding, Natasha Brown came in
first place in accounting, and James
Rossiter look first place in basic
computer, with Kelly Holt in third
place.
Melissa Martin was winner of the
Brunswick County Youth Aware
ness Task Force speech conicsi.
Amanda Poe received a S2.500
per year honor scholarship from
Barton College and a S5,(XX) nursing
scholarship. Michal Burton, winner
of the National Merit Finalist
Scholarship for Outstanding
Minority Students, also won a
Pogue Scholarship from UNC
Chapel Hill, a N.C. Teaching
Fellows Scholarship and a S10.000
per year scholarship to Carleton
College in Minnesota. She plans to
accept the latter.
Students achieving SAT scores of
900 or above were recognized. They
were Michal Burton, Malik Flamcr,
Bryan Housand, Evelyn Hyatt,
Amanda Poe, Carlton Shaw, Scott
Monzon, and Tracy Sisk Those

Hannah Leah Daniel of Southport
graduated May 10 from Meredith
College in Raleigh, a private college

Four seniors from Brunswick
County earned dean's list honors
during the spring semester at Appa
lachian State University at Boone.
They attained a 3.25 gradepoint
average on a 4.0 scale, carrying at
least 12 hours of academic credit.

AUGUST 14-16, 1992
The first annual CALABASH TOWN FESTIVAL will feature an art show,
quilting show, waterfront activities, demonstrations, events,
entertainment and great Calabash seafood from participating
restaurants. Come discover the quaint fishing village of Calabash as
we host the 27th District U.S. Power Squadron rendezvous and cheer
your favorite restaurant in our soon-to-be famous Waiter's Race!
Open to the public, fun and entertainment for all.
Now accepting entries for art exhibit and sale during the Festival, which
will be held on Friday, August 14 from 10 am to 4 pm. Entrants should be
local artists, both amateur and professional. Artists in all categories are
welcome. There will be a $5 entry fee to be returned with the form below
no later than June 30, 1992. Make checks payable to Calabash Town
Festival Committee.
Indoor facilities are being provided, however, art work should not exceed
50" due to space limitations.
Details on space assignments, set-up times, parking, etc., will follow shortly
after registration deadline. We look forward to hearing from all of you!
