South' s Cumbee Got Start Shooting Hoops With Mom BY DOUG RUTTER Alison Cumbee got her start in organized sports like a lot of kids ? by shooting hoops in the yard with her mom. She was just a sixth grader at the time. And when she made the mid dle school basketball team the 10I lowing year, there was no stopping her. The 17-year-old daughter of Greg and Pam Cumbee of South port graduates from South Bruns wick High next week after an out standing basketball career. In fact, Cumbee has also made a pretty good showing as a member of the tennis and softball teams the last two years. The compact, energetic bruneue actually got started in athletics in the fourth grade when she took up karate. Cumbee earned her black belt as a 10th grader, and says the experi ence has been a big help throughout her high school career. "It helped me get in shape, and it got me interested in being active in stead of just sitting around," she said. "It teaches a lot of discipline and I think it's good for your self confidence too." South Brunswick Softball Coach William Hargrove said Cumbee ex udes self confidence, and is a dedi cated and sincere person. "She brings a very positive alti tude to the squad," he said. "She's very coachable. Anything you ask her to do, if it's in her power she'll do it." Cumbee, described by her coach as a good defensive player with a lot of speed, played short field and emergency second baseman for the Lady Cougars. She was the top player on the girls' tennis team her senior year, and was also a major reason behind South Brunswick's success on the basketball court the last two years as a sharp-shooting guard. High school hasn't been all fun and games for Cumbee. She served as class president her junior and se nior years. The honor society member earned a spot on the honor roll every grading period her last two years at South Brunswick. She said she's always been a good student. The privilege of play ing school sports has been a good incentive to do well in the class room. Cumbee said one of her favorite people at South Brunswick is Jack Brown, who was her physical edu cation teacher all four years. "He's helped me out a lot. He's really been nice," she said of Brown, who coaches the varsity baseball team. "Whenever I didn't feel like playing he would say something to cheer me up." Cum bee is an active member of Southport Baptist Church and is in volved in the Fellowship of Chris tian Athletes. She plans to attend the Uni versity of North Carolina at Wil mington in the fall. Cumbee hasn't chosen a major field of study yet, but knows she wants to go to col lege at least four years. She said she'll wait to see how her grades are the first semester be fore deciding whether she'll get in volved in college athletics. "I might try to walk on the bas ketball team but I'm not sure yet," she said. "I'll definitely play intra mural sports there." Cumbee says she'll miss her friends and teachers at South Brunswick and the one-on-one in struction she received in high school. "I've had a wonderful time at South Brunswick," she s?id. "I can't believe it's over with, but I've had a great time."
