Hospital Volunteers Honored
Twenty-two volunteers with The Brunswick
Hospital Auxiliary were recognized for 4,200 hours of
service this past year at a May 28 luncheon at
Joncs/Byrd Clubhouse at Sea Trail Plantation, Sunset
Beach.
Volunteers are involved in assisting the hospital in a
variety of ways, said Daphne Yarbrough, marketing di
rector, and in community projects as well.
"The auxiliary has experienced tremendous growth
over the past year. The number of individuals volunteer
ing their services has increased by 77 percent since May
of 1991," said Ms. Yarbrough, adding that additional
volunteers arc welcome.
The Auxiliary operates the hospital gift shop, from
slocking to sales, using profits to fund other projects.
This year, for instance, they donated a microwave to the
Adolescent Psychiatric Unit and color televisions for the
labor and delivery rooms. Members also knitted and cro
cheted caps and booties for the hospital's newborn ba
bies for the holidays.
Volunteers perform numerous jobs in departments
throughout the hospital, ranging from clerical work to
food preparation, working in the surgical services, radi
ology, laboratory, materials management, nursing ser
vices, labor and delivery unit, dietary services, mcdical
records, engineering, preadmissions and marketing and
staffing the lobby information desk.
Auxiliarists also donated the book of honor for
Lower Cape Fear Hospice's Love Light project and
launched a drive to collect aluminum soda can tabs at
the hospital. Proceeds from the tabs are used to assist
underprivileged families with room and board at the
Ronald McDonald house.
The volunteers are also in the process of establishing
a scholarship to Brunswick Community College to help
hospital employees further their education in nursing.

Grass Will Grow In Sandy Soil
Dear Plant Doctor: I have a new
yard and the ground is very sandy.
In February I put out 10 pounds of
centipede grass, 15 pounds of
bermuda grass and 80 pounds of rye
grass. Last week I applied 80
pounds of 10-10-10 and 200 pounds
of limestone. My lot measures 100
feet by 157 feet.
I am not there all the time to look
after the new seeding, however, 1
did expect to see some grass.
What do you recommend to grow
in this sandy soil?
Answer: You have spent several
hundred dollars on grass seed and
fertilizer but have nothing to show
for your trouble. The first step is to
take soil samples and send them to
the N.C. Department of Agriculture
Soil Testing Labs.
Soil test boxes can be obtained at
any N.C. Cooperative Extension of
fice. For good grass establishment,
soil should be amended according to
the soil test recommendations. In ad
dition, 1 suspect centipede grass and
bermuda grass seedlings were killed
by late winter frosts. Optimum plain
ing time for warm season grasses ex
tends from March through July.
Next, calculate the total area you
plan to plant in turf grass. In your
case, you have 15,700 square feet of
area in your lot, assuming the entire
lot is to planted in grass.
Research has indicated that 0.25
pounds to 0.50 pounds of centipede
grass seed per 1,000 square feet will
give good coverage. That means
that 4 pounds to 8 pounds of cen
tipede grass seed would be plenty to
seed your yard.

common bcrmuda grass arc 1 pound
to 2 pounds of hulled seed per 1,(XX)
square feet. However, please note
that mixing warm season grasses is
generally not a good idea for home
lawn establishment.
The only way to get good cover
age when seeding is to mix seed
with sterile builders sand. Apply
half of the sand-seed mixture in one
direction and the other half while
moving at right angles to the first
pass.
The application of 10 pounds of a
5-10-10 starter fertilizer per 1,000
square feet at seeding time will often
help grass establishment In addi
tion, one to two bales of wheat straw
per 1,000 square feel will help con
serve moisture and help prevent
soil-seed erosion in sandy soils.
The grass specics most tolerant
of very sandy soils is bahia grass.
This grass is very drought tolerant
and resistant to most pests and dis
eases. Bahia grass should be seeded
in home lawns at the rate of 5
pounds of seed per 1,000 square
feet. Be warned that bahia grass pro
duces a tenacious forked seed head
that is difficult to mow.
1 am sending you a copy of the
new and revised North Carolina
State University Extension Service
manual AG 69, Carolina Lawns.
This is one of the best and most
copied home lawn maintenance
guides in the country. This publica
tion can be obtained from your
county Cooperative Extension Ser
vice office.
Good luck with your lawn.
