CLUB BRIEFS Brunswick Shriners Set June 1 2 Fish Fry The Brunswick County Shrine Club will hold its annual fish fry Friday, June 12, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at seven locations across the county, said Steve Norris, event chairman. Tents will be set up at Shallotte, Bolivia, Holdcn Beach, Seaside, Southport, Oak Island and Lcland. Plates will cost $4 each. Watch Elects Officers Brunswick County Community Watch Association elected officers for 1992-93 at its annual meeting held May 15. All of the officers arc from the Zion Hill Community Watch. They arc Grady Mellon, president; Ron Stewart, vice president; Kathy Ste wart, secretary; Inga Arnold, trea surer. Zack Smith was appointed to the board of directors of the North Carolina Community Watch Asso ciation. The annual meeting program in cluded a dinner prepared in part by Crime Prevention Officer Don Gates and Deputy Charles Crocker of the Brunswick County Sheriffs Depart ment, exhibits by Nick Nickerson and A1 Brumdgcr of home security equipment and a talk on folklore by Ella Jo Sellers of Cape Fear Community College. Spokesman Lee F. Miller Jr. said most areas of the county were repre sented, with each community main taining watch patrols in their neigh borhood during the meeting. Retirees To Hear Kelly Dave Kelly, who is in charge of external relations for Carolina Power & Light Company's Bruns wick Nuclear Plant, will be the guest speaker at the June 9 meeting of NARFE's Brunswick County chap ter. NARFE is the acronym for Nat ional Association of Retired Federal Employees. The meeting will be held at Sandfiddler Restaurant in Shallotte, starting at noon, and is open to the public. Spokesman James H. Bryant urged all members and prospective members to attend. Membership is open to all federal government re tirees and federal employees with at least five years' servicc. Beachcombers Meet The Beachcombers Shell Club will meet Tuesday, June 9, at the home of Judy Bryan in Holdcn Beach at 10 a.m. For more information call Mrs. Bryan at 842-7242. Senior Slate Dinner Holdcn Beach Senior Citizens will meet Monday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lock wood Folly Comm unity Building on Stanbury Road said spokesman Ann Robinson. A covered dish dinner is planned. Elks To Honor Flag Calabash Elks Lodge will honor the birthday of the American flag with a ceremony for all members and the public Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at the lodge in Traders Village, Calabash. Lodge spokesman John F. Zicfcl said contrary to popular lore, the flag's history didn't begin with Betsy Ross, but has a much older heritage that will be related briefly by Francis Chancier, the lodge's ex alted ruler. Ziefel encouraged parents to bring their children "for a worth while lesson in American history." After the 30-minutc ceremony, light refreshments with be served by the Elks Ladies Auxiliary, with mu sic by A1 and Pat Hatcher of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Governor's School Gets Two Brunswick Students GALSE KEILL Three were called but only two will be going from Brunswick County to North Carolina Gover nor's School this summer. Moneika Cause and Alison Keill arc West Brunswick High School sophomores selected for this acade mic honor, as was Justin Rohde a South Brunswick High School sop homore. The young women will check in at Salem College June 28, for the six-week session, but Rohde decided to decline the opportunity. He will participate, instead, in a rur al science initiative program at the N.C. School of Math and Science. Miss Gause and Miss Keill will spend six weeks of summer vacation in a school setting for two different reasons. "My cousin went one year and talked about how good it was, and it looked good to me," Miss Gausc said. She was chosen in the area of natural science but docs not intend pursuing a carccr in this discipline. "I'm interested in science, but I really want to go into law," she ex plained. Miss Kcill, on the other, hand is strongly committed to English, the subject she will focus on at Gov ernor's School. "I think I'd like to be an English teacher, and this seemed a good op portunity to find out more about it," she said. Students can make application to the popular program in specific cate gories of learning. Two summer ses sions are held, one at Salem College in Winston-Salem, the other at St. Andrews in Laurinburg. Participants are chosen on the basis of grades and test scores.
