Lance, Detrie Named Top Student BY DOUG RUTTER Aldwin Lance and Pamela Detrie were named sludeni athletes of the year last week at the West Brunswick Winter-Spring Sports Banquet Lancc played football, basketball and baseball during his four years at West and will attend Appalachian State University on an athletic scholarship. Detrie was a four-year lettennan in volleyball, basket ball and softball and was the second-ranked student in the 1992 senior class. Recognition of the outstanding male and female se niors highlighted the annual athletic banquet held last Wednesday night in the school cafeteria. Awards were presented to top performers in boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, chccrlcading, golf, soft ball, baseball, boys' tennis and boys' and girls' track. Detrie was one of nine individuals who received N.C. Scholar Athlete Awards. To qualify, students had to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or better during the semester in which they were involved in athletics. Other state scholar athlete award winners were Elizabeth Detrie, Rebecca Hughes, Emily Gore and Amy Caison, all members of the volleyball team. Also receiving slate awards were Neal Warren, foot ball; Terry Nawara, soccer; Kristi Poulos and Lauren Boyte, tennis. West Brunswick's volleyball team, which tied Whiteville for first in the Waccamaw 2-A conference last fall, also received a special state award for its team grade point average of 3.45. State team awards arc given to squads that earn a grade point average of at least 3.1. The Lady Trojans finished just one-tenth of a point behind Grimslcy High in Greensboro for highest average in the state this year. The awards banquet culminated an outstanding year for West Brunswick athletics. The Trojans won nine county championships and four Waccamaw 2-A Conference titles during the 1991-92 school year. Awards presented last week arc below: Basketball West Brunswick Boys' Basketball Coach Billy Mims presented the Leadership Award to Shaun Bowcn and the Top Reboundcr Award to Lonnie Mitchell. For the girls' basketball team, the Most Improved Player Award went to sophomore Nicole Norris, and the Hustle Award to senior Christy King. Coach Brenda Council gave the Coach's Award for acadcmic excellence to Detrie. She played four years of basketball and helped lead West to a tie for the conler cncc title this season. Monica King was voted by her teammates as Most Outstanding Player. The versatile junior led the Lady Trojans in rebounding and blocked shots and was sec ond in scoring with 12 points per game. His club finished 6-8 in the league and 10-12 overall. Chris Mintz, the team's leading rebounder and scorer, received the Most Consistent Award. Willard Causey was named Most Improved Player, and Eric Johnson re ceived the Impact Player Award. Wrestling Wrestling Coach Joe Noble handed out five awards to members of a team that improved from third to first in the county and 17th to fourth in the region in one year. Seniors Elbert Johnson and Gary Jones, both of whom were first-year wrestlers who advanced to the state tour nament, received Coach's Awards. Dexter Cokclcy was recognized for most wins during the season, and Jay Mitchell was named Most Improved Wrestler. William Stanley also received an award recognizing him as the first West Brunswick student to win a state championship in freestyle wrestling. Cheerleading Coach Kathy Bryant presented four awards last week to varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders, who per formed during the fall and winter seasons. Laurinda Hill received the Best Ail-Around Award for the varsity squad, and Sally Schultc was named Most Spirited. On the junior varsity level, Katie McDanicl and Kelly Stepp both received Captain's Awards. Golf Sophomore Jeremy Grainger was named Most Valuable Player of the 1992 Trojan golf team, which finished second in the Waccamaw Conference. Coach Will Cockrcll also presented an award in se nior Ronnie Bradley for most improved. Sonny Lcggctt received the Captain's Award. Softball Coach Tracey James named Catherine Bell and Jenny Judah as Co-Most Valuable Players for the Waccamaw Conference Softball champs. Bell, a junior who also was a stand-out on the basket ball and track teams, batted .843 during the season and hit 14 home runs. Judah was a .600 hitter for West Brunswick and post ed a 13-4 record as the Lady Trojans' pitcher. Hope Varnam was recognized as most improved. Bell, Judah, Emily Gore and Meg Small were named to the all-conference team. Receiving honorable mention from West were Patti Clemmons and Varnam. Baseball Coach Mike Alderson presented five awards to mem bers of the varsity baseball team that was alive in the state playoffs as of last week's banquet. Recipients were Bryan Fleming, Baiting Average Award; Marly Earwood, Hustle Award; Brian Alderson, Golden Glove Award; Cleon Builcr, Captain's Award; and Scott Gore, Most Improved Award. Lance, Alderson and Fleming were named to the all conference baseball team. Aaron Butler, Kcanc Bellamy and Gore received honorable mention. The Trojans had finished second in the Waccamaw Conference ai 10-4 and ended the regular season at 14-6 overall. Junior Varsity Baseball Coach Gary Moll presented the Hustle Award to Timmy Chcstnult, Offensive Player Award to B.J. Ladson, Golden Glove Award to Chris Payne and MVP Award to Chris Mini/.. Mint/, batted al a .286 clip, led ihc Trojans in RBI, hit West Brunswick's only home run and committed just one error all season long. The West Brunswick JV team went 10-3 in the con ference and 12-5 overall this season. The young squad finished second in ihc league to undefeated Whitcvillc and won the county championship. Boys' Tennis Sophomore Lamar Hardy, the number one player on West's tennis team all season long, received the Most Improved Award last week. The Coach's Award went to senior Jeff Bailou. Under Coach Marti Gillis, West Brunswick went 11-1 and tied Whitcvillc for the regular- season conference championship. The Trojans beat the Wolfpack in a match played to determine playoff sccdings. In the process. West handed Whitcvillc two league losses in the same season for the first time in eight years. Hardy, Bailou and Bcnji Mankin were each named to the all-conference tennis team, while Kelly Woolen, Chris Carter and Michacl Scllars received honorable mention. Track Fresh off her second-place finish in the triple jump at the N.C. High School Track and Field Championships, Irene Johnson was named MVP of the girls' track team last week. Coach Kathy Bryant also gave the Most Improved Award to distance runner Stacy Dalcamo. She helped lead the West girls to a first-place finish in the county meet and third in the conference. Boys' Track Coach Joe Noble also presented two awards, one to Phillip Johnson for most improved. The sophomore finished seventh at the state championships in discus.
