Miss Holth. a resident of HOLTH Boiling Spring Lakes, is a Peace College graduate, with an associate of science degree in business admin istration and a bachelor of arts de gree in sociology and criminal jus tice. She has years of training in bal let. jazz and voice and is a charger member of the Pcacc Pacer's Dance Troupe in Raleigh. A former Miss Pender County, she has twice been a top 10 finalist in the Miss North Carolina-USA pageant, as well as fourth runner up in 1985. Area talent, including Miss Holth, will provide entertainment, includ ing the Junior ABC Show-Team di reeled by Jimmy Watson; Shanta V aught, the current Little Miss Black Pearl; Fascinating Rhythm; Courtney Pridgen, the reigning Little Miss Wilmington; and 1991 N.C. Tiny and Liule Miss Fourth of July queens. Amber Leigh Tyncr and Moira Elizabeth Casten, respec tively. Ten girls arc competing for the Tiny Miss title and nine for the Little Miss title. The June 2 Awards Day at Shallotlc Middle School paid tribute to the many eighth graders who ex celled during the year in a variety of academic, athletic and artistic en deavors. The Daughters of Uic American Revolution award went to Cindy Fcnton. who also won the coveted Gary Poulos Award, named in mem ory of a young man who died in a sand cave-in dunng his seventh grade year in March 1981. The plaque presented to her described qualities of Christian attitudes, scholarship, rcspect for others and participation in extracurricular activ ities. Miss Fenton also received a certificate and a Cross pen for four years of perfect school attendance. Other community awards present FENTON VARN'UM ed include Woodmen ot the World, given to Chad Smith; DAR Out standing Citizen, Erica Cumbee; and Shallolte Junior Women's Club Student Arts Festival awards to Sondra Gray and Leah Sloan. Sixteen school award winners in cluded the language arts plaque to Jeremic Varnum; the football award to Joel Gupton; the most improved eighth grader designation to Tonya Stewart and certificates and Cross pens for nine years of perfect atten dance to Joel Meshaw ana Julie Long. Recognition was also given to outstanding students in chorus, handbells, band, art French, library, horticulture, physical education, so cial studies, language arts and math and science. Seventh grade marshals for the ceremony were Erin A. Lee, Diana Anderson, Sarah Brown, Amanda Chestnut, Heather Clcmmons, Shcn na Lancaster, Caroline Sheffield, Sue E. Sicvers, Leah Sloane and Crystal Widener. Principal Mark Owens and Assistant Principal William Detrie spoke to the students, the school chorus performed, and the proces sional and recessional were accom panied by music from the handbell choir. CLUB BRIEFS Calabash Elks Auxiliary Sets Initiation Calabash Elks Lodge Auxiliary No. 2679 will initiate new members Wednesday, June 17, al 7:30 p.m. at its regular meeting at the lodge. Prior to the meeting, Dick Owens, esteemed leading knight, and other Elks will prepare a S5 steak dinner for the women only, serving al 6:30 p.m. with advance reservations re quired. Members arc also submitting rccipcs this month for compilation of a cookbook to be called Mrs. Calabash's Kitchen , and volunteers led by Norma Nordbruch will play bingo with resident of Brunswick Village in Shallottc Monday, June 29. Excercisc classes at the lodge continue each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. through June, then will not resume until September. Cost is SI for members and non -members. The Auxiliary will hold auditions June 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the lodge for a talent show that will be held in September. Participants don't have to be good, said spokes man Mary Noorigian, just brave enough to get up front of other members and do something. "It should be fun," she said. Moretz Exhibits Art Paintings by Nell Moretz are on exhibit in the Brunswick Comm unity College (BCC) lobby until June 29. Ms. Moretz specializes in oil and watercolor, but also works in acrylics and pen and ink drawings. She is a member of North Caro lina Nature Artists, whose shows have displayed her work, and of Associated Artists of Southport and the Oak Island An Guild. She leaches a painting class at the Long Beach Recreation Center through the BCC continuing educa tion program. Shaw Alumni Reactivate Graduates of Shaw University in Raleigh arc reorganizing the school's local alumni chapter, with meetings held the second Thursday of each month at 5 p.m., spokesman Edna Gausc said. The group has elected new offi cers and adopted a project for the year and is seeking additional mem bers. Serving as officers arc Irene Hankins, president; Starric Grissett, secretary; Sandra Robinson, treasur er and membership committee chair person; Lizzie Mitchell, program chairperson; and Lorcnc Williams and Mrs. Gausc, publicity chairper sons. Sam Flowers is in charge of fund raising. As their first project the group has scheduled a local concert by the Shaw University Gospel Choir on Nov. 8.
