with merit. At the academy she
served as a member of the Glee
Club, as co-managcr of the pistol
team and, during her senior year, as
a company adjutant and as the mid
shipmen's representative to Trident
newspaper.

Valedictorian of her 1988 class
at West Brunswick High School, she
is the daughter of Richard and Faith
Plyler of Sunset Beach.
She will remain in Annapolis as
an assistant in the English Depart
ment until Jan. 29, 1993, at which
time she will report for duly at Na
val Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., for
naval flight officer training.
The U.S. Naval Academy is con
sidered one of the top institutions in
the country, offering a broad cur
riculum of engineering, science and
humanities to prepare the midship
man for a military career, in addition
to year-round military training for
that Ms. Plyler included a stint in the
Middle East during Operation De
sert Storm.
Teacher, Student Teaming For Rural Science Workshop
A studcnt-icachcr team from
South Brunswick High School will
participate in the Student Science
Projects Workshop, a two-week pro
gram sponsored by the North
Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics (NCSSM) as part of its
Rural Science Initiative.
South Brunswick High teacher
Charles E. Aldrich of Bolivia and
student Justin Rohde of Long Beach
are among 1 1 teams chosen for the
program at the state school's cam
pus in Durham.
Aldrich will spend the week of
June 28 reviewing and learning lab
oratory skills, investigative strate
gics and data analysis.
For the sccond week, Rohdc will
join Aldrich and will select and be
gin a research project which can be
continued when they return to South
Brunswick.
In 1993 this year's participants
will have an opportunity to return to
the NCSSM campus to participate in
a symposium of their students' re
search.
The program is designed to help
"break down the isolation that exists
in rural areas," said Steve Warshaw,
head of science at NCSSM. The
goal of the project is to establish a
network of rural and NCSSM teach
crs collaborating to improve scicncc
teaching all over the state.
The program is funded by a grant
