County Mosquito Control
Spraying Full Time Now
Following rcccni heavy rainfall, the Brunswick County Mosquito
Control Department goes to a full-time spraying schedule this week.
Julia Wallace, department secretary, said the department sprays on a
regular basis in some areas and in response to specific complaints in oth
er areas. Most frequently sprayed arc those areas from which the depart
ment has received the most complaints.
"We assume the areas that have the worst problem as the ones who
call the most," said Ms. Wallace.
The department also will honor requests that a particular location not
be sprayed.
"Some people arc allergic to the chemical, others have pets or other
things outside they prefer not to have sprayed," said Ms. Wallace. "Some
people simple don't want their property to be sprayed. We try to respect
that."
Residents who do not want the control truck to spray in a specific lo
cation, as well as those who arc having a problem with mosquitoes and
want to make sure their area is sprayed can call the department at 253
4366 weekdays.
Spraying with malathion, an organophosphate, is just one of the ap
proaches used by the county for mosquito control.
Along with being a nuisance, mosquitoes transmit diseases such as en
cephalitis, dengue, yellow fever, malaria and filariasis, and in dogs,
hcartworms.
Robbery Suspect Arrested
Wilmington policc have arrested
a man wanted in connection with a
"snatch and grab" robbery at a con
venience store in Leland Monday
moming, according to the Bruns
wick County Sheriffs Department.
Del. Capt. Phil Perry said the man
was one of two who parked in front
of McGcc's Minit Mart on Village
Road at about 8 o'clock. One of the
men went inside and asked the clerk
to exchange a large number of pen
nies for silver.
While the clerk was counting the
pennies, the man reached across the
counter and grabbed an undeter
mined amount of cash from the reg
ister, Perry said. The man than got
in the wailing car and left.
A passing motorist saw the two
men drive off and, thinking some
thing was suspicious, followed the
car and wrote down the liccnsc lag
number. Using this information and
a description from the clerk, detec
tives determined the identity of the
two men and obtained warrants for
their arrest. Perry said.
"We know who both of them
arc," Perry said. "They both have
criminal records."
One of the men was later appre
hended in Wilmington in connection
with a similar robbery that occurred
there around 6 a.m. Monday, Perry
said. He would not release the name
of the suspect until a warrant has
been served. Neither of the men is
from Brunswick County.
Perry said there have been a num
ber of similar "snatch and grab" rob
beries recently in the Wilmington
area.
