All or practical

their time?
Two programs arc helping meet
that need.
Many of the children, along with
parents and oilier volunteers, were

The young adulLs of Cedar
Grove's group of public school

tutorial session that starts June 22
and will be held from 8:45 a.m. to
12 noon daily. All children arc invit
ed to enroll.
Staying Busy
On Saturdays the Cedar Grove
Improvement Association picks up
the slack, offering plenty of commu
nity involvement activities to keep
both children and adults busy. These
include yard sales, dinner sales and
roadside litter pickups.
A few weeks ago some uncon
ccrncd people damaged the entrance
sign to the community on Cedar
Grove Road (S.R. 1125), breaking
the lattice work.
Theodore Bellamy very quickly
repaired the sign, making it as good
as new.

Call On Experts To Identify Pests
Dear Plant Doctor: I lost some
dogwoods, a flowering cherry and a
Chinese chestnut tree from what ap
pears to be the same insect problem.
In the spring these trees failed to
leaf out. On the trunk and limbs I
noticed a fine chimney of sawdust
that protruded .75 to 1.0 inches and
was about the diameter of a pencil
lead.
I suspect it is some type of borer.
How do I prevent it from getting any
of my other trees?
Answer: I do not have any idea
which insect is damaging your trees,
but 1 do know who to ask.
Some experts believe that more
than 1 million different species of
insect exist on earth and I think over
half of them must inhabit southeast
ern North Carolina. I go to special
ists when confronted with an un
known pest or disease problem.
The Plant Disease and Inscct
Clinic at North Carolina State Uni
versity was established to identify
plant diseases and insects of econom
ic importance. The clinic's director,
Ron Jones, Ph.D., uses the expertise
of N.C. State University's patholo
gists, entomologists, virologists, bac
teriologists and other research spe
cialists to identify the problem and
help prescribe a solution.

Contact your county extension

ornamentals or turf.
Most (90 percent) disease and in

easily identified and a control rec

to your county agent. If the problem
cannot be easily identified, request
that the agent send the specimen
/sample to the Plant Disease and
Inscct Clinic.
The clinic often acLs as an early
warning system of severe new pest
problems that have migrated into the
state. Just this week a professional
turf grass manager had me send a
cricket that was destroying large ar
eas of turf grass. The cricket did not
look like anything I had ever seen
before.
The clinic's entomologist report
ed the cricket to be a new cricket
species for North Carolina. Special
ists are planning a visit in the near
future to sec and evaluate the pest
firsthand.

Fire blight is an especially dam
