ALDERSON NAMED TOP COACH West's Fleming , Gore Shore County Player Of Year Honors I?V DOUG Rl'TTKR West Brunswick rising seniors Bryan Renting and Scott Gore share 1992 Brunswick County Prep Baseball Player of the Year honors after leading the Trojans to one of their best seasons in school history . The powerful catcher and crafty pitcher got the job done in the field and at the plate this spring as West advanced to the eastern finals of the stale 2-A playoffs. Renting, a catcher who has played on the varsity level since his freshman year, led the team in hit ting. home runs and RBI this year and displayed strong leadership qualities. "Bryan runs the show out there," said West Brunswick Coach Mike Alderson, who was chosen county coach of the year after guiding his club to a 17-7 record in his third year at the helm. "I'd say he's one of the top three catchers in this region, and the best catcher in the Waccamaw 2-A Conference" Aldcrson said. Fleming, an all-county selection his freshman and sophomore years, posted impressive numbers at the plate this spring. He batted .354 with five home runs and 23 RBI "He had a great season," Aldcrson said. "When he hits it, he hits it. He doesn't get cheated up there. He gets his money's worth." Gore, who was named most im proved player on the West Bruns wick squad, was Fleming's battery mate for about half of the Trojans' games this season. The right-handed pitcher posted an 8-3 record on the mound this sea son, leading the team with an ERA of 1 .14 and 95 strike outs. Gore also hit .318 for West Brunswick, while throwing a pair of two-hitters, one one-hitter and one no-hitter. Mixing fastballs and curves all season. Gore won state playoff games over Aydcn-Grifton and C.B. Aycock. "He had a really big year on the mound for us," Aldcrson said. Brian Aldcrson, son of Coach Mike Aldcrson, also rccordcd five saves his senior year and had an ERA of 2.25. Aldcrson played shortstop when he wasn't pitching and had a field ing average of 86 percent. He won ihc team's Gold Glove Award and hit .288. Other pitchers include Jared McGcc of North Brunswick, a ver satile player who started, relieved and played shortstop for Coach Keith Moore's Scorpions. McGcc was 4-3 as a pitcher with a 1.49 ERA. He hit .290 with three home runs and 24 RBI. Representing South Brunswick on the all-county pitching staff are Brett Tabor and Rodney Willough by, who fired a no-hitter early in the season. Infielders Inficldcrs other than Fleming named to the all-county team in clude three players from South Brunswick who hit over .300 this spring. Second baseman Mike Brogan, shortstop Eric McMahan and catch er Mike Clcwis each hit around .330 for the Cougars. Also named to the team was West Brunswick junior Keane Bellamy, who alternated at second base and shortstop for the Trojans. Despite a tough year in the Field, Bellamy had some key hits for the Trojans, including the game- winner in the third round of the state play offs against East Bladen. Aldwin Lance, a two-time county player of the year in football, earned his second straight selection to the all-county baseball team. The speedy center fielder was the lead-off hitter for West Brunswick all spring, batting .322 and stealing 21 bases. West Brunswick's Aaron Butler, who played fullback and linebacker on the football team, is a newcomer to the all-county baseball team. The junior left fielder hit .308 for the season. North Brunswick additions to the all-Brunswick County outfield arc Adrian Black and Demetrius Bell. Black led the Scorpions in hitting in 1992 with a .292 average. Bell was a .289 hitter with five doubles and one triple. He also stole eight bases for the Scorpions. Rounding out the all-county out field is South Brunswick's Jason Braccy, who was a .320 hitter for die Cougars. Selections to the all-county team arc made by sports writers for The Brunswick Beacon and Slate Port Pilot newspapers, with nominations from coaches. Sabiston Leads In Woodmen League Rhonda Sabiston rolled a 219 game and 516 scratch scries to lead the women in the Woodmen of the World Bowling League Friday at Brunswick County Bowling Center in Shallottc. Other high rollers among the women were Ellen Benton with a 174 game and Cindy Clemmons with a 161. Thurgood Grissctt had the men's high game with 1%. Runners-up were Bruce Mitchell with 182 and Jim Ramsey with 181. Tom Haley had the high scratch series with 492. Top finishers on June 5 included Lois Ramsey with a 191 game and 465 series, Mary Russ wiih a 176 game and Sis Howell with a 167 game. For the men, Mike Williams had a 594 series and 199 game.
