Lincoln Kindergartners To Get Summer Remediation BY MARJORIE MEGIVERN For the firsi lime, some of Bruns wick County's sandbox set will have to spend part of the summer with the books. Children who just completed kin dergarten at Lincoln Primary School will attend a summer session, from July 7 to Aug. 7 at Lincoln. Instructors will include Lincoln teachers Betty Miller, Myra Rob bins, and Jane Henry. Assistants, al so Lincoln personnel, are Barbara Williams, Essie Vaughn and Eliza beth Holt. The Brunswick County Board of Education approved the recom mended project in its June 11 meet ing, in response to a study by Lin coln's School Improvement Com mittee. Principal Joseph Butler said a screening program used at Lincoln to assist with early prevention of school failure had identified defi ciencies among the kindergartners. "We did pre-testing and post-testing this last school year and found that, at the end of the year, 78 percent of the children were below grade lev el," he said. "About half the kinder gartners tested on a two- to three year old level." Butler said many young children in the Lcland area do not have the r exposure lo formal settings because they have not attended pre-schools or participated in any other group activities. "Others start to school at the age of four and don't turn five for sever al months," he added. "We believe the need some enrichment before moving on to first grade." The summer school will cost about S21,(XX) for teachers, bus drivers and supplies. Butler said grant applications had been made to educational foundations and in dustries, as well as to the central of fice. With no positive response from an outside source, it will be funded from the county's summer school budget, he said. Butler said other schools may want to try this pilot project after its effectiveness has been determined. "We certainly hope to do it every year," Butler said.
