Southporf Prepares For
Another Rousing Fourth
The 4th of July means just one
thing in Brunswick County: South
port's N.C. Fourth of July Festival,
one of the year's highlights and a
top-notch treat of summertime.
You can hear music and enter a
shag contcst; you can guild your
own ice cream sundae and view an
exhibition of quality art; you can
watch a colorful parade and browse
among unique local crafts. These arc
only samples of the opportunities
available from July 1 through 5 in
Southport, as festival takes over the
town.
If you're an old hand at this fun
filled event, you know all about the
beach music concert, with Band of
Oz this year, the annual art exhibi
tion in Franklin Square Gallery, the
street dance on the waterfront, and
the variety of children's entertain
ment available in Franklin Square
Park, as well as field events for kids
on Garrison Lawn.
You will need to take note of a
new event this year, a wind surfing
contcst and exhibition on the water

front, to be held from 2 p.m. to 3:30
p.m. Saturday, July 4. There will be
competition at all skill levels and
lessons given to novices, as well as
exciting demonstrations of this wa
ter sport for all to enjoy.
Highlight of every festival is
Saturday's parade, beginning at 11
a.m. Don Hughes, coordinator of
this event, said it will be "bigger and
better, because Southport is cele
brating its bicentennial year."
Hughes cited 15 floats, 15 Shrine
units and an all-high school band
from Brunswick County as part of
the spectacle. It will once again be
televised by WW AY -TV Channel 3,
but much of fun is being there in
person.
Tommy Rohbins, in charge of en
tertainment, has sccurcd an impres
sive lineup of musical talent. In ad
dition to Band of Oz, he said July 3
waterfront entertainment, from 1
p.m. to 6 p.m., will feature the Rob
Massingale group, playing big band,
beach and top 40 music.
Immediately following will be the
street dance, with top 40 and beach
music provided by North Tower and
by local bands Magnum and
Category.
The July 4 waterfront entertain
ment, Robbins said, will be supplied
by Witness, a contemporary Chris
tian youth group that tours the re
gion, the local group Wild Heart,
with classic rock and contemporary
country, and The Embers, whom
Robbins called the "kings of beach
music," with nine albums to their
credit.
Other highlights of July 4 arc the
pancake breakfast at Trinity United
Methodist Church, from 7 a.m. tolO
a.m., the Freedom Run at Water
front Park, beginning at 8 a.m, and
the 3 p.m. concert by the local Sea
Notes at Southport Baptist Church.
An Independence Day "must" is
fireworks, and the Southport festival
provides them the night of the 4th,
beginning at 9 p.m. on the water
front.
The festival will wind up July 5
with the annual firemen's competi
tion, a unique series of contests
among county volunteer fire depart
ments, held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in
the Southport City Hall parking lot.
