Resorts Offer Beach Fun,
Shopping. ..And Worship
BY MARJORIE MEGIVERN
Travelers to the resort areas of
Brunswick County have no excuse
for neglecting their customary Sun
day worship. A full complement of
services can be found on and near
local beaches in the favorite infor
mal style of vacationers.
Unless otherwise noted, they are
all held at 8:30 a.m. on Sundays,
from Memorial Day weekend
through Labor Day weekend, mostly
in the open-air, with an assortment
of denominational settings. To most,
worshippers arc encouraged to bring
their own lawn chair or blanket for
seating.
One of the oldest is the worship
service on the beach in Ocean Isle
Beach, sponsored by Shallotte
Presbyterian Church, but decidedly
nondenominational. The Rev. Les
ter Dattler, pastor of the Shallotte
church, said his group can be found
eight-tenths of a mile west of the
pier, with accesses on Driftwood
and Duneside drives.
"We average 300 to 400 people
on Sunday mornings, and we had
1,800 people this Easter Sunday," he
said. "When the new services started
a few years ago, we lost Church of
God and Pentecostal members, be
cause they preferred those more
charismatic services."
The other services to which he re
ferred were instigated two years ago
by Odell and Virginia Williamson,
Ocean Isle Beach developers, who
also built a chapel across from the

west of the pier or a more formal
setting in the chapel at 11 a.m.
These are interdenominational ser
vices, with a different minister each
week who receives a week's stay in
a condominium there in exchange
for his ministry.
In the Holden Beach area, three
services are available, including one
at the Campground by the Sea on
Ocean Boulevard West and one at
Tanglewood Shelter on Seashore
Road.
Oldest in existence is the Holden
Beach Chapel, which hosts a pastor
of the week and offers Sunday
school and an 11 a.m. worship ser
vice, with nursery provided. Gil
Bass is in charge of the nondenomi
nalional services in the chapel,
which is located across Rothschild
Street from Holden Beach Town
Hall.
Brunswick Islands Baptist Church
sponsors the campground program,
with a variety of ministers and lay
men leading services in the "little
brown hut". The Rev. Walter Clegg
presides at Tanglewood Shelter.
Another campground. Sea Mist
Campground, is the setting for wor
ship at Brick Landing, where the
Rev. Herman Absher of Jennie's
Branch Baptist Church is responsi
ble for the resort ministry services.
At Sunset Beach, Calabash Pres
byterian Church began offering a
service on the strand Easter a year
ago. Worshippers gather on the
beach just east of the pier at 8 a.m.
for services led by the Rev. Francis
M. Womack Jr., pastor.
In the South port-Oak Island area,
visitors can worship on the beach at
the Long Beach Cabana, a program
jointly sponsored by the summer
staff at the N.C. Baptist Assembly at
Fort Caswell and First Ba[Hist
Church of Oak Island.
