Participating in the week of chal lenging training were Stacey Ridge way, Joseph Hawcs, William Hob son, Chris Long, Ronnie Fcnn, David .Sellers, Daniel Williams, Chris Brown, Tonya Hcwctt, Will iam McLcod, James Anns and John Branning. West Brunswick JROTC Chief Bill Jackson said more than 532 cadeLs representing 51 high school units from the Carolinas and Virgin ia attended the camp June 6-12. The camp is designed to build in dividual self-confidence and rein force subjects the cadcts learn throughout the academic year. At Camp Victory, Jackson said cadets demonstrated leadership, communication skills and physical fitness and learned the importance of teamwork. The JROTC cadcts received ad venture training and hands-on in struction in water survival, first aid, physical fitness, marksmanship and rappclling. Additionally, the South Carolina National Guanl provided the cadcLs an equipment orientation on Army tanks, vehicles and helicopters. Cadets were housed in Army bar racks and ate in Army dining facili ties. They also participated in a day of competitive games and enjoyed a cookout. The Army ROTC Department at the University of South Carolina and Army JROTC instructors from the 51 high schools planned and con ducted the camp. Thirty-five senior ROTC cadets from eight colleges helped with training. Chief Jackson, the JROTC in structor from Wcsl Brunswick who accompanied the cadcts, had nothing but praise for the 12 local students. "For one week, these teenagers were members of the 4th Platoon, Company B, and they followed a daily schedule that generations of former service members can recall," he said. Cadets were housed in typical two-story World War II era bar racks, wore olive-green fatigue uni forms and were assigned leadership positions from squad leader to com pany commander or a rotating basis. Jackson said the cadcts main tained good morale throughout the Individual Group Hospitalization Major Medical Introducing a 1 00% health plan at economical rates endorsed by the American Small Business Association (ASBA). All of the local cadets earned M 16 nfle qualification badges to wear on their uniforms next year. Chief Jackson singled out two cadets for special honors, Joe Hawcs and Tonya Hewctl. Hawcs, a third-year cadet and ris ing senior at West, received the Honor Cadet designation for being evaluated in the top 5 percent of his company. At the closing ceremony, he was presented with a ccrtificatc of achievement signed by the camp commandant and an "Honor Cadet" baseball cap. Miss Hcwctt, also a third-year cadet and a rising junior, was com mended for her couragc and inde pendent spirit. "As the lone female cadct from West Brunswick, she lived in a sep arate female barracks and did not have the constant peer support that her classmates had," Jackson noted. "However, she quickly made new friends and adjusted to the situa tion." Baker Insurance Service, Inc 5818 E. Oak Island Drive, Long Beach, NC ^8465 I TOO MANY TICKETS? D.W.I.? We can save you money!
